Christian Actress Has This to Say About the Kendrick Brothers
By Movieguide® Contributor
Priscilla Shirer says her latest movie, THE FORGE, is a “story worth paying attention to.”
“What I know of the Kendrick brothers…they are men of such integrity,” Shirer said while appearing on “Deep End With Lecrae.” “They, like, for real love Jesus. They’re not trying to use all this as a stepping stone to get somewhere else — this is their calling, their ministry, and they want the church so much to be edified, and they care deeply about honoring culture.”
THE FORGE tells the story of a young boy trying to figure out how to grow up and fulfill God’s plan for his life.
“Isaiah Wright has some growing up to do,” a synopsis of the movie reads. “A year out of high school with no plans for his future, Isaiah is challenged by his single mom and a successful businessman to start charting a better course for his life. Through the biblical discipleship from his new mentor, prayers of his mother and a prayer warrior named Miss Clara, Isaiah begins to discover God’s purpose for his life is so much more than he could hope for or imagine.”
Shirer said, “I’m hoping it translates well, and that people are endeared to it and that they hear the message, because the story is worth paying attention to.”
Movieguide® previously reported on THE FORGE:
THE FORGE explores how having strong leaders can make an incredible impact. While this is true for all areas of life, it is especially true for faith, where having somebody to shepherd you through can be the difference between whether or not you form a relationship with Christ.
“[THE FORGE] is family-friendly, but it is intense and exciting. In some different places, it is an emotional roller coaster. There’s some funny humor that’s in the movie, but most importantly, it’s this call to discipleship—that we need to get busy about leading people into an abiding surrendered walk with Jesus because that’s the greatest thing in the world,” said Stephen Kendrick.
“We believe the Lord is going to stir up this focus in the body of Christ, and so we’re very grateful to have worked on a movie like this,” Alex Kendrick added. “It was challenging for us but edifying for the body of Christ because we need to be salt and light like never before.”
She also spoke about her career as a public speaker and her views on women in ministry.
“I’ve been in ministry for 25 years now,” Shirer said. “I just kind of remove myself from the conversation, and I kind of just go back to saying, ‘Lord, what is it that You’ve called me to do?’”
She added that, while she “did not grow up in an environment where I saw women preaching,” she knew it was something she was called to do.”
“I knew my primary calling was women’s ministry,” Shirer explained. “I knew that was the vein the Lord assigned me.”
In addition to her work in ministry and on the screen, Shirer is also an author. Her latest book, “I Surrender All,” was inspired by themes from THE FORGE.
“From Priscilla Shirer comes this fervent appeal and invitation to surrender everything to Jesus,” a synopsis of the book reads. “To follow Him not just as your Savior but as your priority, your first love, your Lord. To move beyond being a believer to becoming His disciple. Because there is a difference.”
The synopsis continues, “This book will be impossible to simply read because it beckons you to make a decision about the kind of Christian you will be. Prepare to engage, to write, to pray, and be called into a surrendered life. An abundant life. A disciple’s life.”
Shirer’s previous movies with the Kendrick Brothers have won Teddy Bear® Awards, including OVERCOMER and WAR ROOM.
