A new study revealed that the majority of Christians think it’s okay to watch porn. The study from Barna Group and Pure Desire Ministries revealed that 62% of Christians “believe someone can regularly watch porn and still lead a sexually healthy life.”

These results have increased since a similar study was done in 2016, where only 13% of Christians confessed to watching porn.

Pornography isn’t just an issue for men. 44% of women admitted to watching it regularly, which has increased from the 12% of women in 2016.

Barna CEO David Kinnaman made a statement on the new and staggering statistics. “At Barna, we’ve seen significant changes in the use of pornography and its impacts since we last studied the issue eight years ago,” he said. “The rise in porn has been fueled by the shift to daily life online during the pandemic, increased loneliness, anxiety, and depression; the spread of sexualized content on social media and growing cultural acceptance.”

Relevant magazine shared something potentially more devastating than the porn issue itself: Christians are getting little to no support from their church on the issue.

“Only 10% of Christians reported that their church offers any programs to help. The majority of porn users (84%) say they have no one helping them avoid it, and nearly half say no one knows about their use.”

This is where ministries like Pure Desire come into play.

According to their website, Pure Desire Ministries International is a biblically-based and clinically-informed ministry committed to true revival in the church through the healing of the present day epidemic of sexual brokenness.

Pure Desire strives “to provide hope, freedom, and healing from sexual brokenness and betrayal trauma through Jesus Christ.”

Other ministries als0 offer hope to people battling addiction.

Joshua Broome, a former porn star who met Jesus and became a pastor, addressed this issue in a previous podcast that Movieguide reported on. The church needs to step up and help those who are struggling.

“Well, when you don’t mention the thing that’s holding you captive, you create a prison for yourself, and you’re actually holding yourself captive by believing that thing is unmentionable,” Broome said. “And in many churches, you know, throughout the U.S. and throughout the world, pornography is something that seems to be unmentionable. We talk around it, but we don’t talk about it,” he continued. “And if we talk around sin, we’ll never eradicate sin. So if we don’t talk about porn, we’ll never give people language to combat it, and what we’re trying to do is give people weapons to fight the real battle that they’re in.”
