Are You Ready to Embrace The New Gibbs?

With the premiere of NCIS: ORIGINS finally here, Austin Stowell is ready for the world to finally see him as a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Ever since he was cast for the role earlier this year, Stowell has been preparing himself to portray one of TV’s most beloved characters. From brushing up on his NCIS trivia to having discussions with Mark Harmon, Stowell has fully thrown himself into this role.
“Mark and I talk a lot about what it means to be the leader of a team, about what it means to be a leader of this set and crew,” Stowell told AP News. “Those conversations have been invaluable to me because I don’t know what it’s like. I’ve never been No. 1 on a TV show before.”
Throughout his preparations, Stowell has come to realize what makes the character of Gibbs so special and how that makes him relatable to the widespread NCIS audience.
“Gibbs doesn’t wear a cape. He just has to use his brain and use his heart,” Stowell said. “I would argue that that makes him the most super of the heroes because it’s real. It’s something that we can all accomplish.”
The point in Gibb’s life that Stowell is taking on, however, finds the character still developing as a leader as he takes on the hardest trial of his life. While Stowell will stay true to Gibbs, his younger version is different from the older one too.
“They don’t know as much as they think they do,” Showrunner Mark D. Cross said of NCIS’ fans. “Seeing Gibbs arrive at NIS on Day 1, and seeing how Gibbs became Gibbs…? You will realize there’s so much to explore.”
NCIS: ORIGINS premiered this week with a two-hour special episode.

NCIS: ORIGINS is generating hype for its pilot season by offering fans sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes shots before the first episode airs next month.
In July, Austin Stowell documented his transformation into young Gibbs as he got a haircut and cleaned up his facial hair. With the transformation complete, Stowell and the rest of the cast have been hard at work to film the first season.
At the beginning of September, the NCIS Instagram page posted a photo dump of the actors behind the scenes. The photos included the cast garbed up in their NCIS uniforms, the actors enjoying themselves while hanging out at their trailers and other extra content to help audiences get more and more excited for the show.
