Craig Morgan spent years in the military jumping out of planes and serving in active combat zones, but when he returned home, he decided to pursue a career in country music.

“I tell people all the time I attribute a lot of my success in this [country music] business to skill sets that I learned in the army,” Morgan told Southern Living’s “Biscuits & Jam” podcast. “I think probably the greatest thing that I learned in the Army that affects me today is having had the ability to go to other countries and experience other cultures and truly appreciate how fortunate we are in this country.”

“It gave me such a great deal of appreciation for the things that I think some people can easily take for granted, especially musicians, that for me, every day was a blessing,” he continued. “For me to have a job where I get to be creative and influence other people in a positive manner is beyond anything I could ever imagine.”

In late February, Morgan released a new EP called American Soundtrack, an album that “most people in this nation can relate to.”

“I believe most people in this nation can relate to something in each song on this project. I absolutely love songwriting,” Morgan wrote in a post on social media. “God has given me a gift that allows me to impact other people’s lives. That is a blessing, and I’ve learned not to take it for granted. Hope you all enjoy these 6 new songs.”

Morgan has also written a book titled God, Family, Country: A Memoir, which details his service to his country, at home and abroad.

“Craig Morgan was part of an elite group of military operatives jumping into the jungle along the Panamanian border on a covert operation. Fans know the country music star from his hit songs and acclaimed albums, but there’s a lot more to him — a soldier who worked with the CIA in Panama, an undercover agent who fought sex traffickers in Thailand, and a dedicated family man who lives the values he sings,” a synopsis of the book reads.

Morgan starts his tour tomorrow, May 1, at the Grand Ole Opry House. It ends on Sept. 6, in Lakeside Marblehead, Ohio.

While Morgan’s career as an active duty solider in the Army is over — though he does still serve in the Army Reserves — he continues to rely on the lessons he learned while serving his country as he pursues his music career.
