The Los Angeles Police Department recently honored Marlene Willis, the 90-year-old mother of actor Bruce Willis, for her decades of dedicated volunteer service.

While her son is globally recognized as a Hollywood star, Marlene quietly built her own legacy through compassion, humility and community support.

For more than 20 years, Marlene, also known as “Mrs. Willis,” has volunteered at the LAPD’s West Los Angeles station. Over that time, she has become a beloved presence among officers and staff. Her work includes reviewing police reports, checking grammar and assisting with administrative tasks. However, her contributions extend beyond paperwork. According to those who work with her, Marlene provides emotional support and encouragement to officers returning from difficult calls and offering kindness to those around her.

“At 90 years old, Marlene ‘Mrs. Willis’ (Yes, Bruce’s mom) has quietly become a cornerstone of the LAPD’s West LA station, dedicating more than two decades of volunteer service to supporting officers and staff,” the Los Angeles Protective League said in a statement.

“Known for her warmth and consistency, she spends several days each week reviewing reports, assisting with administrative work, and offering something just as valuable: genuine care for those returning from difficult calls,” the statement continued. “Despite being Bruce Willis’s mother, she never draws attention to it, instead choosing to focus entirely on serving what she calls her second family: the LAPD.”

LAPD Chief Michel Moore shared his deep appreciation for Mrs. Willis, telling NBC Los Angeles, “While I can’t make her a cop, I can at least give her the greatest symbol of what it means to be a cop. And that is a badge of the law center police department.”

He continued, “Marlene, there are people in our lives that, when you cross their path; they leave a lasting impression. You are one that has risen to the top of one of the best impressions. To you and the work you do, we will be forever grateful.”

Moore added, “She was never one to wear her identity as his mother on her sleeve or even involve him in even passing references of her life, which impressed me.”

Marlene’s recognition by the LAPD serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful contributions to society often come from quiet acts of service. Through her work, she has not only supported law enforcement but also aided her community in ways many do not realize.

Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Stories like Mrs. Willis’ should inspire us all to do our best at whatever God sets before us.
