Universal Pictures and Moonbug are bringing babies to the big screen in 2027.

COCOMELON, which follows baby JJ and his friends, is a musical TV series that originally streamed on YouTube before it became a Netflix sensation. Now, with an upcoming feature film, the kids’ show has come a long way since YouTube.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that COCOMELON is one of Netflix’s regularly top-rated shows. It also has spinoffs COCOMELON LANE, CODY TIME, NINA’S FAMILIA and JJ’S ANIMAL TIME on the platform. Its music is on Amazon Music, Spotify and Apple Music. Its YouTube channel gets 4 billion average monthly views.

Prime Focus Studios and DreamWorks Animation will produce the movie. The DNEG group will animate using computer-generated images.

The movie is inspired by “CoComelon LIVE! JJ’s Journey.” The original COCOMELON show is 100% music — no dialogue — and doesn’t have strong episode themes, so it will be interesting to see JJ and his friends following a plot.

The description for the live musical reads, “JJ and his family are putting on a show where JJ is writing his own song and he needs a little help. In the end, JJ learns that by using his imagination, he can create, solve problems and can have wonderful adventures, proving that with a little help from your family and friends, you can make your dreams come true.”

“With all the favorite characters and over 20 songs, including new original music, the show is a terrific journey through the world of CoComelon.”

Movieguide®’s reviews of COCOMELON note the series repeatedly shows a same-sex couple. In one episode, their child, a boy, dances in a tutu. Unfortunately, more recent COCOMELON content deviates from the healthy, married-parent models that many COCOMELON seasons display.

Movieguide® wrote of the first eight seasons: “COCOMELON contains a strong moral worldview. It prizes family values and is big on kindness and consideration for others. It shows children what a healthy family relationship looks like.”

“Though the show’s audience is young, the creators pay attention to small details,” Movieguide® continued. “Parents wear wedding rings and always show love for each other and their children. It highlights parental and gender role models with songs like ‘My Mommy’ and ‘My Daddy.'”

If Moonbug and Universal Pictures want to attract more moviegoers, then the studios will keep their new film clean, moral and family-friendly as they once did. Here’s hoping they will have their viewers’ best interests in mind.
