Allie Beth Stuckey recently interviewed musical duo Shane & Shane about how they lead their families.
“I think the Lord has used our failures more than our successes,” Shane Barnard began. “In the moments that we can humble ourselves and ask for forgiveness, like model brokenness, model a need for Jesus, like daddy needs Jesus.”
He explained that he tries to act on small convictions, like spending time with his kids during their routines, instead of just going through the motions.
“There was a moment years ago where I got convicted by the Holy Spirit to formalize tuckin’ times [bedtime] instead of like, ‘I’m beat. I’m tired. I’ve been through the day. Let’s just get this over with so I can be with Beth and, you know, watch something or hang out,’” he explained.
Now, he actively plans for how he can lead his family at bedtime.
“Asking the Holy Spirit for His leadership as I sit with these girls for 30 minutes. And just that one little decision made a big impact, because He would answer, you know, and lots of conversations, songs, scripture,” The “God of Every Grace” singer said. “That has been really neat.”
Another thing that’s helped his family is homeschooling. It’s given them the chance to have devotionals together in the morning.
“Now, you know, every weekday, we read through a couple chapters…in the Bible and really dialogue around the table about what that is,” Barnard explained. “And then we’ll sing a song and pray together and it’s been really really sweet just to have that moment in our day that’s available.”
Shane & Shane have performed together for over 15 years. They’ve won three Dove Awards and sold over 500,000 albums.
Barnard says his personal Bible studies heavily influence his songwriting.
He told Word by Word, “It’s everything. I rarely start a song without a trigger from the Scriptures. At the end of the day, I don’t have anything to say. I have to go somewhere there’s something worth writing about: God’s Word. “
Shane Everrett previously told CBN about his and Barnard’s relationship: “There is a security between us that bonds us for life. I guess the best way to say it is that if we were two trees, I’m the tree right beside him. We receive the same water, we face the same storms, and experience the seasons together.”
Through bedtime moments, morning devotionals, scripture-based moments and brotherhood bonds, Bernard and Everett highlight how spirit-led decisions have a lasting impact.
