Dennis Quaid recalled how a conversation with Bill Gaither inspired his gospel album.
“Gaither came along and, out of the blue, wanted to do a record with me. And see, I kind of felt like I [was] being called to do this because of the things I wanted to write about,” Quaid told Matthew West. “Writing about your faith, it doesn’t get any deeper than that.”
In 2023, this project came to fruition through the album Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners. He made the album to help anyone listening turn to God, even if they had not thought about their faith for many years. He had previously been in that camp, falling away from this walk with the Lord when he came to find success in Hollywood.
“We’re all looking for the joy of life, and drugs give that to you, and alcohol and whatever it is for anybody give that to you really quick,” Quaid previously said. “Then they’re fun, and then they’re fun with problems, and then they’re just problems after a while. That’s really what we’re looking for, the joy of life, which is our gift, actually, the relationship with God that we all have. It’s at the bottom of it, the joy of being alive.”
Having hit rock bottom through drugs and alcohol, Quaid understands how it feels to believe that you are unlovable, both by those around you and by God. However, after coming through that season, he also understands that God can build us back up and help us realize that everybody is a sinner and just as undeserving of his love as their neighbor. This is the story that he has tried to capture through his album, to help even the most prodigal son return.
“All of us have a relationship with God, whether you’re a Christian or not,” the actor previously told PEOPLE. “We all have a relationship with him. It may not be good, or you may not even believe, but you’re still in relationship to that side of yourself.”

“I think people get confused…the personal relationship with Jesus Christ is your relationship with Him personally. You don’t need a church for that, you don’t need the approval of a priest or this or anything. That’s between you and Him,” Quaid later added. “So, it’s not really about living a boy scout life and doing, you know, being good. There’s certainly good deeds, that’s great, but it’s about who you are really inside.”
Quaid has experienced both the highs and lows of life, and it is encouraging to see him use his platform to glorify God and help millions of his fans connect more with the Lord, no matter where they are in their walk.
