Reality star and survivalist Bear Grylls says his relationship with his faith has “been a lifetime journey.”

“I had a really natural faith as a kid,” he said during an appearance on “The Way UK” podcast. “I knew we’re loved. His light is rooted in fun and freedom and connection.”

As Grylls got older, he began to lose that connection with his faith. However, when his godfather passed away when he was 15 years old, Grylls was deeply upset. He prayed, telling God he “really, really need[ed]” Him at that moment.

“And nothing really dramatic happened, but from little acorns great oak trees grow, and little things started to happen, and people were brought into my life,” he explained. “And it felt like the pilot light was on.”

Grylls continued, “[My faith] has never left me, and it’s been a lifetime journey to understand that faith is about that fire inside, that streak of steel in our hearts. It’s about friendships and connections. It’s about being plugged into the Almighty.”

The MAN VS. WILD star frequently talks about his faith and how it has impacted his life.

“For me, having a Christian faith can be difficult to articulate,” he told GQ in 2017. “It’s like describing ice cream or swimming — it has to be tried to be felt. But, in a nutshell, my faith tells me that I am known, that I am secure and that I am loved — regardless of the storms I may find myself in from time to time, regardless of how often I fall and fail.”

Grylls discussed his faith in detail in a recent column for The Times, writing, “[M]y Christian faith has strengthened me in so many battles I’ve faced in life.”

“In years gone by, I have ignored my faith and tried to do life without it,” he shared. “I have tried to be strong only in myself. But I have found that my heart is restless until I open the door to Christ again. I have discovered that we lose our power when we try to live on our own strength alone. I really need His helping hand, His peace within and that quiet assurance.”

Grylls continued, “My Christian faith helps me to live more adventurously, be bold and take risks, but also to care and encourage, to love and support those closest to me and hopefully beyond as well. It’s easy to be cynical about faith and to push difficult issues and questions aside. But to explore is good. To question is wise. To seek truth is courageous.”

“To choose to have a faith takes courage,” Grylls concluded. “All too often it is the tougher path, but life and the wild have taught me that the tougher path often ends up being the most fulfilling one.”

Grylls “lifetime” faith journey is an inspiring story about the powerful role God plays in our lives, even when we’re questioning our faith.
