Chip and Joanna Gaines shared the “awkward” new hobby they’ve picked up that’s refreshing their 22-year marriage.
“What we’ve realized in 22 years of marriage…is we still feel like newbies. Anytime you unlock a new thing, and you do it together, it only grows your relationship,” Joanna told PEOPLE. “I hired this couple; they came to our office and taught us how to dance.”
Chip joked, “Just she and I with this couple. You talk about awkward.”
Joanna described this new experience as “awakening” their relationship, explaining that she could see “insecurities [and] strengths” that she might not have noticed before.
“[When we started] we didn’t know how to hold our hands. It’s hard to make eye contact with even your best friend and wife of 22 years,” Chip said. “I felt really strange, awkward. But then, after two or three weeks, we started looking forward to those lessons. It was this sweet reminder that all of us could use refreshes and challenges in our relationships.”
Joanna added, “I feel like dancing is the most symbolic way of talking about, as a couple, ‘How do you stay in sync in life?’ We do really good in real life, we have our rhythm. But with dancing, we were so off, it was surprising. We’ve done everything else so well, but this we totally suck at! But it was beautiful.”
Another way the Gaines are keeping things exciting in their marriage? Adding a new member to the family.
“Chip asked the kids to go on a road trip with him for Father’s day,” Joanna wrote in an Instagram post, sharing that they traveled to Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona.
“And then back in Texas to Marfa where they decided to surprise mom and get another puppy,” she revealed. “We named her Marfa.”
The couple are also currently hard at work on their latest TV project, BACK TO THE FRONTIER.
“In the series, three families hailing from across the country join together in the wilderness surrounded by 10,000 acres of nature, without the modern conveniences of technology, running water, or electricity,” a description of the show reads.
In a statement from the couple, they shared, “This series taps into something we’ve always believed—that stepping away from the noise of everyday life can bring you closer to what matters most. It is proof that no matter where you find yourself, the most important part of home is the people you share it with.”
From hobbies and pets to an exciting new TV show, the Gaineses are keeping things fun and exciting these days!
