Sometimes it’s the simple things that help couples stay close, and for Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond and her husband Ladd, those moments come while they drive their old pickup truck.
“At the risk of sounding like an old married couple, we love to take drives together,” she said in a blog post on her website. The pair have been married nearly 30 years.
In a world engrossed in technology, the pickup truck helps the couple to connect without the “noise.”
“There’s something about the peace of the pickup. That diesel engine is like background music, and we are focused only on each other. No laptops, devices, TV’s…it’s such a great time to catch up,” she said.

Ree explained that they like to change things up and drive to different places each time.
“Honestly, it’s different every time. Sometimes we stay on the county roads and check on fences or cattle; other times we’ll drive east to Pawhuska or west to Ponca City, stopping to get a convenience store Dr Pepper when we get there,” she said. “Other times Ladd will drive into this pasture or that, to show me an area of a creek that I may not have seen before, or — again — to check on a cow or a fence.”
The Drummonds’ five children — Alex, Paige, Bryce, Jamar and Todd — are now all adults, so Ree and Ladd don’t necessarily need the time alone.
“But there’s something about the safety and sanctity of the pickup that sparks the very best conversations,” she emphasized.
Ree contemplated how fast time goes in a Father’s Day Instagram post reflecting on their first daughter Alex’s birth in 1997.
Alongside a sweet photo of Ladd holding his newborn daughter, she wrote, “1997. Feels like forever ago and feels like yesterday. I love this photo. When I see it I stop and stare and feel those 1997 feelings. Neither of us knew what we were doing.”
She explained, “Ladd didn’t have sisters, so these were uncharted waters for him especially. But Alex made it easy for him to fall in love with fatherhood, and Paige after that. When the boys came along, they were just the icing on the cake.
Despite the fact that their children have moved out, the family still remains close.
Alex previously said of her mother in 2022, “To me, she is the same mom that she was before all of this craziness started, and she cares just as much about my graduation and my brother’s sporting events as she does her TODAY show appearances and things like that.”
The Drummonds’ old pickup truck is a sweet reminder to take time to enjoy simple moments with the people who matter most to you.
