Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen gave all the glory to God after the Bulldogs defeated the No. 12-ranked Arizona State.

“It was awesome,” the quarterback said when asked about how excited he help secure the game-winning touchdown. “You know, I give God the glory in every circumstance — in the good and bad.”

“You know, He always has a plan for my life, and you know, I even prayed that at halftime, like I know God has a plan for me,” he reflected. “It’s been a roller coaster of a ride for me in my college career, just with injuries and, you know, things like that. So, you know, being able to come and win this one was really sweet. So, I give Him all the glory for it.”

According to Hail State, “Shapen completed 19 of his 33 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns.”

Late in the fourth quarter, Mississippi State needed “77 yards with 1:33 left. Blake Shapen needed one more clean pocket. Brenen Thompson needed a sliver of space. They got all three,” Sports Illustrated reported.

With 0:30 remaining in the game, Shapen, who describes himself as a “believer” in his Instagram bio, found Thompson for a 58-yard touchdown for the Bulldogs to beat Arizona State 24-20.

“We got three timeouts left, hold them to a field goal and we will find a way to go score and win the game. That was the message. It shows great toughness, belief in one another,” head coach Jeff Lebby said he told his team.

In the post-game press conference, Lebby added that the win sends a message that the Bulldogs are “trending the right way.”

“We have a ton of work to do, but to find a way to win after all the things that happened inside the game,” he explained, according to On 3. “The way we started and the things that happened in the second half. And then get the ball back with no timeouts, down a field goal and go right down the field and score. There’s a belief inside our walls. Our guys know what we’re capable of. We have continued to play a lot better to get where we want to go. But what an incredible night for our program.”

It’s amazing to see athletes like Shapen glorify God in their triumphs and losses. Mississippi State will play Alcorn State this Saturday at 5 p.m.
