The Robertson family women recently reflected on the valuable marriage lessons matriarch Miss Kay Robertson embodied throughout her relationship with her late husband Phil Robertson.

“Early on, I realized Kay was on my team,” Jessica Robertson, wife of Jep Robertson, said on the “WHOA That’s Good” podcast. “She was somebody that I could go to. Most people were like, ‘Oh, don’t go to your in laws about you have marriage trouble,’ right? She was one of the first ones.”

She added, “Besides I only said she was one of the first people I called and said, ‘Jep’s acting like a turd. This is what he’s doing.’ And she backed me every time she stood up for me, she was on in my corner, and it was just such a comfort, because I’ve always said I was like, I have a special bond.”

Jessica emphasized that good marriages require hard work, a lesson she learned from watching Miss Kay’s own marriage. Miss Kay was married to the late Phil Robertson for nearly 65 years before his death in May 2025.

“We wanted a good marriage, and it takes work, a lot of work, and being intentional. And that’s something that Jep and I, you know, like we took after them, we still tickle and cuddle in front of our kids, and they know we love each other passionately,” Jessica said.

Missy Robertson, wife of Jase Robertson, chimed in about how Phil and Kay’s relationship has inspired the whole family: “To hear the cousins talk about their parents, you know, and then Phil and Kay, that’s a gift to me, because so many of the cousins are some of my favorite people on this planet, and they’re amazing.”

She called the couple “a catalyst for even all of their families as well being able to forgive Phil, what Kay did, but with restrictions, like, ‘I forgive you, but you’re not moving back in until you fix things right with yourself…I’m not going to put my boys at risk, yeah, because of your choices.’”

She explained that when people were ready to give up on Phil before he met Christ, Miss Kay was not.

“I think she earned that respect because that whole family said, ‘Okay, you need to leave him. You need to get away from him. He’s never going to change.’ And she didn’t. She stuck with him. So she earned their respect by staying, you know, and so then her and Phil were able to be that example for the rest of them.”

Miss Kay and Phil shared an “epic love story” that emphasizes Christ’s redemptive power. In a post to Phil Robertson’s Instagram account, his team shared a sweet photo of the couple along with a tribute to their relationship.

“Phil and Miss Kay had an epic love story. 50 years ago, she wasn’t sure they’d make it. No one knew if Phil’s wild life would leave him drunk in a ditch, or worse. But that’s not where their story ends,” a post shared to Phil’s Instagram reads.

But, God met Phil in his mess.

“When Phil was at his lowest, grace met him there. He turned to Christ, and everything changed. What was broken was restored. What seemed lost was redeemed. A marriage on the brink became a lifelong love. A family in pain became a testimony of God’s power to transform generations,” the post continued.

2023’s THE BLIND tells Miss Kay and Phil’s story. Movieguide®’s review reads, “THE BLIND is a good movie as a Christian testimony. That said, it doesn’t follow the rules of filmmaking. So, it may not win a big audience. The movie is propelled by the jeopardy, and vice and drinking, but Jesus is extolled.”

Although Phil has since died, the story of this couple’s marriage continues to inspire people today.
