Churchome pastor Judah Smith says God wants our brokenness.
“You know what God wants more than anything?” the pastor explained on an episode of PRAISE. “Do you know what he wants from us? Brokenness, which is another way of saying what God wants is you.”
“But you know what you are?” he continued. “Fundamentally, categorically, definitively, broken…We are born broken, the scripture says. ‘Born in sin,’ David says.”
When we tell God we’re broken, he knows we’re at a place where we’re ready to change.
“Life gets really hard when you don’t have hope,” he continued. “Our scars and our brokenness, and our journey really breeds hope in people who feel like they’re a million miles away from God and his approval and his love and his acceptance, when, in fact, they’re not…Anything we do going forward, I just want it to reek of hope.”

“And somebody can go, ‘Whoa, bro, like, if God can help that guy, like I know he can help me,” the pastor said, tearing up as he spoke.
Smith, who used to be Justin Bieber’s pastor, also shared how God opens his arms to everyone recently on Bryce Crawford’s podcast. He said God knows we have feelings, destructive thoughts and our weaknesses.
“Apostle Paul is like…Take this weakness from me,” he said. “Take this thorn in the flesh. God’s like, be weak, then you’re strong. ‘Cause that’s when my is most prevalent and obvious,” Smith said.
Smith continued, “And maybe there’s somebody watching this that can’t get out of bed and maybe our response isn’t like, ‘Get out of bed and trust God!’ It’s like, lay there and ask him to meet you and show you his love.”
Earlier this year, the pastor reminded his Instagram followers that God “knows what you have need of, before you even ask. He sees you and will take care of you.”
Smith’s new book with Les Parrott, Bad Thoughts: A Preacher and a Shrink’s Guide to Reclaiming Your Mind and Soul, just came out last month. The book equips readers to:
- “Let go of false guilt and discover the road to grace”
- “Cure your disease to please and cultivate authentic relationships”
- “Extinguish self-doubt and rekindle your confidence”
- “Put pride in its place and embrace humility”
- “Quit questioning your personal value and receive God’s gift of love”
