Grammy-nominated Christian artist Phil Wickham is set to star in Angel Studios’ upcoming animated musical DAVID.
“There are few men that have had a greater impact on my life than King David. His story, his songs, and his faith have shaped me deeply,” Wickham said in a press release. “What an honor it has been to help bring this character to life! It truly has been a dream come true that I never saw coming.
He continued, “Finding David’s voice inside of me was both a challenge and a joy — thanks to an amazing team who helped guide the way! I’m so proud to be a part of such a beautiful and life-giving film. I believe it will fill hearts with hope, and lift eyes to Heaven for many years to come.”
“Phil Wickham embodies everything we hoped to capture in the character of David,” DAVID’s creator, Phil Cunningham, added. “His voice carries adventure, energy, strength, and vulnerability — qualities that reflect David’s heart as a warrior and worshiper. From the first moment we heard him perform, we knew he was the perfect choice to bring this beloved story to life.”

Per the movie’s logline, DAVID is a “joyful animated musical about the life of the ancient prophet, poet and king. After one young shepherd boy is chosen to battle a giant, this chosen one goes on to inspire an entire nation of believers.”
Angel Studios recently partnered with 2521 Entertainment to buy 100% of DAVID, as well as a five-part animated TV series, YOUNG DAVID. Angel revealed they are thinking about continuing the show now that they have the full rights to the series.
“Owning the DAVID intellectual property is a long-term strategic asset and we anticipate making similar series acquisitions that resonate with the Angel Guild and have performed exceptionally well on our platform,” Angel’s CEO and co-founder Neal Harmon said in a statement about the partnership.
Angel and 2521 Entertainment have previously collaborated on projects like KING OF KINGS, THE WINGFEATHER SAGA, THE LAST RODEO, SOUND OF FREEDOM and the upcoming YOUNG WASHINGTON.
The deal also settles some outstanding litigation between Angel Studios and Slingshot USA, DAVID’s production company, over distribution rights. It was even hypothesized that DAVID wouldn’t make it into theaters this year, but luckily, the partnership with 2521 Entertainment has put an end to the movie’s legal woes.
DAVID will be released exclusively in theaters Dec. 19.
