Hallmark star and director Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe recently revealed her Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis.
“In February of 2025, while getting ready one morning, I noticed a large mass in my right breast,” she wrote in a personal essay for People. “In that moment, everything else fell away.”
Lowe went to the doctor and got a mammogram and ultrasound, but they didn’t find anything. Months later, the mass was still there, and the actress went back to the doctor. This time, she was told, she had Invasive Carcinoma.
“Essentially, I’m looking at the whole deal: chemo, double mastectomy, radiation and, eventually, implants,” the SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED star wrote. “As someone who’s never had any major illness, it was a lot to digest.”

She has since started chemotherapy and is “surrounded by so much love and support,” from family and friends, to co-workers and network execs who have “shifted schedules” so that she can continue working.
Lowe has also been open about her journey, even posting a video of herself shaving her head.
“Waking up to clumps of hair falling out was traumatic. Hiding it was the worst!” she wrote in an Instagram post. “But doing this… this made me feel like I was in the drivers street.”
Lowe continued, “Also, I still cried a lot. But after it all…felt so strong. Side note- surround yourself with people that tell you how beautiful you are bald. That is the assignment. And if you don’t have anyone I will tell you!!”
In another post, Lowe wrote, “I can’t tell you how much better I feel. The whole family was there to support me. Kids giggled and my son has asked me to let him friends all touch my bald head. My daughter even said… you look pretty good! lol highest compliment you can get is from a 9 year old girl.”
In the conclusion of her essay for People, Lowe promised readers “to persevere. To turn poison into medicine. To grow. That’s what I’m learning every single day.”
“If you’re walking a hard road too, just know, you’re not alone,” she concluded. “We may not get to choose what happens to us, but we do get to choose how we meet it. And I’m meeting it — with my sword raised, my heart open, and taking it one step at a time.”
Lowe’s essay, as well as her transparency surrounding this battle, are an inspiration to anyone else going through cancer treatment.
