Kristin Chenoweth received some backlash for her comments following Charlie Kirk’s September assassination, which “nearly broke” her.

“It was tough on me,” Chenoweth said. “But I’m not going to answer any questions about it because I dealt with it. It nearly broke me, and that’s all I’m going to say.”

“You probably know my heart, so you probably know,” she said.

In September, Chenoweth said that while she didn’t endorse everything that Kirk stood for, she was heartbroken over his death.

“I’m. So. Upset,” she wrote on Instagram. “Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak.”

“His young family. I know where he is now,” she continued, “Heaven.”

“But still such a sad, senseless, and disgusting act! ….prayers for the Kirk family and prayers for our nation.”

Kirk was known for his Christian beliefs and anti-LGBTQ stance, which upset some Americans.

Chenoweth received comments like, “She voted for Trump, she is a raging racist who mistreats people of color she works with, and has been using the LGBTQ community to line her pockets while actively working against us,” and “How many times does it need to be said that Kristen Chenoworth is a Republican woman?!?!?!?!?”

After the backlash, the actress reflected on what she wrote.

“I came to understand that my comment hurt some folks, and that hurt me. So I would never — it’s no secret that I have been, that I’m a Christian, that I’m a person of faith,” she said. “It’s also no secret that I am an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.”

She explained that many believe Christianity and LGBTQ+ advocacy don’t “go together, but for me it always has and it always will.”

Other celebrities have made similar statements to Chenoweth and were also heavily criticized.

Micheal Keaton said, “I’m going to take a minute to say that, regardless of how I probably – not probably – have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife,” he said. “You gotta remember that.”

“Because in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable,” he said.

Chenoweth didn’t intend to or include any hate or hurt in her statement about Kirk. She was simply expressing her grief. It’s sad that some of those who gave her backlash prioritized their pro-LGBTQ beliefs over the loss of Kirk’s life — a groundbreaker, father and friend.
