Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Sunday in their game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to Sports Spectrum, Kansas City was “trailing 16-13 late in the fourth quarter, Mahomes scrambled to his right and was tackled by Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand as he threw the ball away. Mahomes grabbed his left knee right away and left the game. Initial fears were soon confirmed: It was a torn ACL.”

On Sunday, after the game, Mahomes turned to his faith in God.

“Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie, it hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you, Chiefs kingdom, for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I will be back stronger than ever,” Mahomes wrote on social media.

This isn’t the first time Mahomes has shared about his faith in God. During last year’s Super Bowl, Mahomes told the media, “Jesus is my Lord and Savior. He’s someone that I look up to every single day to decide what I want to do with my life and how I want to live my life. So, Jesus is everything to me at the end of the day.”

During an episode of the “Intersection” podcast, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt spoke about Mahomes’ faith and how that is “one of the most inspiring parts of the star quarterback’s journey,” per Heavy.

“One of the guys that I have enjoyed seeing grow so much in his faith has been Patrick Mahomes,Hunt shared of the quarterback. He was raised in a Christian family, and I have seen him be more demonstrative of his faith here across the years. Anytime that I have an opportunity to have that conversation, it’s always special.”

One of Mahomes’ favorite Bible passages is in Acts 27, which has served as an anchor for the quarterback.

It’s about a boy named Eutychus and his faith, listening to a sermon, and falling and dying and coming back to life, the quarterback explained. It spoke to me in that moment of how I need to live my life and how I need to be fully invested in God.”

Mahomes suffered one of the most gruesome injuries in all of sports: a torn ACL. The injury could take up to six months to recover from. Despite the setback, Mahomes trusts in God’s plan for his life.
