TODAY host Savannah Guthrie recently had vocal cord surgery but still gave an update on the show with a hilarious message from her kids.
Guthrie temporarily left the show on Dec. 19. She’s been recovering from her surgery, which removed nodules and a polyp from her vocal cords, PEOPLE reported.
On a segment on Jan. 12, Guthrie video-called from home and held up a whiteboard that read, “Hi! Miss you!”
“I was telling them how I called you the other week for you not to answer so your voicemail would play but you answered and just clapped over and over again like a seal,” Bush Hager told Guthrie.
Guthrie told her co-hosts, “The kids said, ‘Mom, even when you’re quiet, you’re still loud,'” which earned some laughter.

While she’s been gone, Guthrie has spent time journaling, reading, painting and “trying to grow as a human.”
She showed her co-hosts her paintings; one of them was a painting of the TODAY symbol.
“Some of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit,” Guthrie shared on Dec. 19. “Well, I have found out what it is. I have vocal nodules and I also have a polyp. It’s not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks, so this is my last day for a little while.”
In the Dec. 19 segment, the show displayed a humorous clip from THE BRADY BRUNCH when Peter Brady’s voice screeches when he sings.
Guthrie joked that she feels like Peter.
“I just want to let everyone know, and if you’ve been wondering, do I have the world’s longest head cold? No, I don’t,” she said.
She wrote on Instagram, “Here’s the story of a scratchy lady Who was dealing with some naughty vocal chords 🎶 Little update: having vocal chord surgery so I don’t sound like Peter Brady anymore!”
“I have to be silent for a couple of weeks…Christmas coming early for my family,” she joked on the show.
Her co-star, Sheinelle Jones, previously had the same surgery and gifted Guthrie a whiteboard.
On Jan. 5, she gave an Instagram update and held up a whiteboard selfie that read, “All good! Thanks for prayers and love!” She captioned it, “see you soon! 💛”
If all goes well, Guthrie will resume her usual role on the show next week.
