Fox’s new Biblical series, THE FAITHFUL: WOMEN OF THE BIBLE, stars Minnie Driver, Jeffrey Donovon and more.

Driver, known for her roles in GOOD WILL HUNTING and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, stars as Sarah in the three-episode limited series that premieres March 22.

The show will air weekly the following two weeks on Fox and will be available on Hulu the next day, Deadline reported.

Five biblical stories will be “told through the eyes of the courageous and passionate, yet flawed women whose descendants would shape three of the world’s great faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” the show’s original synopsis reads.

Other women’s stories featured are Rebekah, Hagar, Leah and Rachel as they explore “discovering and losing love, the challenges of marriage, the joys and heartbreak of children, confronting temptation and finding faith.” Alexa Davalos, Blu Hunt, Millie Brady, Natacha Karam, Tom Mison, Tom Payne, Ben Robson and Jame Purefoy also star.

Carol Mendelsohn (CSI) serves as executive producer, and Rene Echevarria (THE 4400, CARNIVAL ROW) serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer. Julie Weitz also serves as an executive producer. The project is part of Mendelsohn’s first-look broadcast deal she signed with Fox in 2022.

“THE FAITHFUL follows the Old Testament’s heroic, biblical matriarchs and opens a new lane of storytelling at Fox. This show is the definition of strong, female character-driven storytelling, exploring timeless themes that originated thousands of years ago, yet remain startlingly modern and relatable,” said Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn. “Carol, Julie and Rene bring unbelievable depth, dimension, intimacy and surprise to stories so many think they know but will completely rediscover through this powerful new lens.”

Fox greenlit the show in May of last year. It was originally slated for six episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series was filmed in Rome and Matera, Italy.

Fox said in a statement, “This landmark drama series is based on the best-selling book of all time, the Bible, and showcases a faithful dramatization of the Book of Genesis as told through the eyes of the courageous and passionate, yet flawed women whose descendants would shape the future of faith as we know it today.”

“Sarah, married to Abraham (Jeffrey Donovan) and desperate for a child, takes an impassioned and complicated step through Hagar that forever alters her family’s path before experiencing an unexpected miracle late in life,” the statement continued. “Rebekah, intent on securing her favored child’s destiny, intervenes in her sons’ lives, setting into motion a legacy of sibling rivalry and division.”

“And once inseparable sisters, Leah and Rachel become rivals in love and motherhood, building a fractured but foundational family whose descendants will carry the weight of history. Through longing, sacrifice, and perseverance, these women leave an enduring imprint on a story much bigger than their own.”

THE FAITHFUL joins the recent uptick in Bible-based entertainment options.
