AMERICAN IDOL alum Clark Beckham is reminding us of the true reason we worship.

“It’s time to stop singing the lyrics [to worship songs] because they’re on the screen,” he said in a recent Instagram video. “It’s time to stop singing the songs because we’re supposed to. Worship leaders, it’s time to stop singing the songs because the guide in our ear says ‘verse, chorus, interlude, bridge.’ And it’s time we use the tool that God gave us to come back into communion with Him and get out from behind the walls that we’ve put up of shame, of guilt.”

Beckham continued, “Because, don’t you see, worship is for us. It’s not for Him. He doesn’t need to be reminded that He’s good. He’s fully aware. He doesn’t need to be reminded that He’s capable. He doesn’t need to be reminded of His promises. We do.”

In his post’s caption, the singer-songwriter wrote, “Worship is the opportunity to come out from behind the barricade of fear, doubt, anger, or shame that we hide behind. It’s to say ‘I trust you and I believe you are who you say you are.’ When we believe the words we sing, we reject the lies that bind us.”

Beckham often shares his thoughts on the power of worship. During a talk held at the Mission Grove Church, he said, “True worshipers worship in spirit and in truth.”

He then referred to John 4 and the story of the woman at the well, saying, “Jesus is showing us an example of what true worship is, and worshipping in unhiddeness…worship is an invitation for us to come out of hiding, to step out from the barricade of shame and fear that is built on the lie that God does not love us…it’s to come out into the full contact of the glory of God, just like He intended it.”

In a 2015 interview with Patheos, Beckham talked about how his faith has served him in the music industry.

“Just because God gave me the talents that are presented on a stage doesn’t make me better than anyone on the planet. It’s just awareness,” he explained. “I’ve had my foundation on solid rock; I’ve had my foundation on God before this, and if I didn’t, then I probably would be all in, just, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m the best thing ever; I’m a star,’ if I didn’t have a foundation and an understanding of what purpose is, what life is.”

Beckham’s words are a powerful reminder of the importance of worship and how it can strengthen our relationship with God.
