STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU’s four-day opening made $100 million, thanks to families.
It’s the fourth-largest domestic opening for a movie this year, IndieWire reported. It has an A- CinemaScore and an 89% popcorn meter on Rotten Tomatoes. Over half of audiences have seen it on IMAX or other PLF screens. One quarter of the weekend’s audience was under 18 — which means a good chunk of its audience are families.
Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads, “THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is action-packed and has some funny, heartwarming moments, with no foul language. It also has strong positive themes about fighting tyranny and evil, doing the right thing, helping the young find their way and risking your life to rescue others.”
“However, THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU has lots of strong action violence, including many fights against scary monsters and some scenes where Grogu uses mystical Force magic. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.”
The movie stars Pedro Pascal as bounty hunter Din Djarin who takes his young apprentice, Grogu, on a quest to detain an Imperial warlord and rescue Rotta the Hutt. It is produced by Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni and Ian Bryce. The movie also stars Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White. Favreau also directs.
The movie has made $163 million globally, Entertainment Weekly reported. Its high audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is the highest for any STAR WARS movies made by Disney, Parade reported. The only ones with higher scores are the original STAR WARS movies by Lucas Films.
The warm response comes from the bond between the Mandalorian and Grogu, Grogu’s adorable appearance and traits and moral values, which is also exemplified in the Disney+ series, THE MANDALORIAN.
Part of Movieguide®’s review of THE MANDALORIAN: Season 1 reads, “The cinematography and editing in THE MANDALORIAN are excellent and blend seamlessly with the appearance and style of the STAR WARS movies… As an action series, THE MANDALORIAN definitely delivers, and the title character quickly becomes more relatable. There’s lots of action violence, betrayals and plot twists in THE MANDALORIAN, but little objectionable content.”
Esquire writer Anthony Breznican pointed out that the movie is attractive because it’s also about family.
It leans “into the sunnier side of the dad and kid relationship. STAR WARS needs this right now. So do parents and their little ones,” said Breznican.
The movie will play in theaters until at least the end of June.
