It’s Time to be Distressed!

by Dr. Ted Baehr & David Outten

July 10, 2009 was a great date to be deeply grieved and distressed. Universal Studios  released “Brüno,” arguably the most vile and pornographic movie ever released by a major American movie studio. On the same date, I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER, another despicable comedy, also hits theaters.

The great American evangelist Billy Sunday once said:

“When may a revival be expected? When the wickedness of the wicked grieves and distresses the Christian.”

If Americans, especially Christian Americans, cannot be grieved and distressed on July 10, 2009, we are like salt that has lost it’s savor, and we’re good for nothing but to be trampled on by Hollywood.

If your son or daughter died, you might be grieved and distressed. We need to have that same kind of reaction to the death of American culture. After all, millions of Americans (and millions of people overseas) are being led to Hell by the depravity of Hollywood.

Do we really want revival?

We must not be content to watch as more and more children abandon Christianity in favor of the immorality promoted by some of the Hollywood elite.

You wouldn’t dream of taking your child up to an altar as a human sacrifice to some pagan god. Can’t you see, therefore, that, spiritually, American children are being sacrificed today. They’re being given to the Hollywood mass media of entertainment to babysit and educate. Is it any surprise they grow up vulgar, violent and sex crazed?

Even if you’ve done an exceptional job raising your own children, they’re going to live in a culture dominated by those raised to hate righteousness.

If Christians will not get grieved and distressed about what Hollywood is doing, Hollywood will be free to go even beyond “Brüno” (which is hard to imagine). If Christians WILL get grieved and distressed, we can change Hollywood. We’ve done it before.

In the 1930s, the major Hollywood studios agreed to abide by the very biblical Motion Picture Code when Christians grew increasingly outraged by growing excesses in the popular culture. As Christians prepared to wage economic and political war on Hollywood, Hollywood changed.

When Christians relaxed their guard and stopped funding the Protestant Film Office in the 1960s, Hollywood started down the path toward “Brüno” and “I love You, Beth Cooper.”

General revival is far more than just dealing with the entertainment industry, but if Christians cannot muster enough distress to be outraged by “Brüno,” don’t expect God to bring revival and renewal to American society anytime soon!

If you are distressed, please take action. Please go to www.movieguide.org to find out what you can do!
