MY BLOODY VALENTINE

What You Need To Know:

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D opens in a small Pennsylvania coal town, where a miner, Harry Warden, wakes up from a coma and slaughters 22 people. One teenager, Tom, the heir to the mine, barely misses having his hair parted by Harry’s bloody pickaxe. The old sheriff shoots Harry in the mine, but his body is never found. Ten years later, Tom returns to town after his father dies to close the mine. The pickaxe murders resume. Suspicion falls on Tom and Axel, the new town sheriff, Tom’s rival for Axel’s wife, Sarah.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D comes with all the graphic, bloody R-rated horror violence you might expect for such a 3D movie. It also has an extensive nude scene where one of the miner’s female victims runs around completely naked before the miner kills her. The movie tries to build in a little suspense, but it has some awkward lines and acting moments. The most clever 3D effect is not the extreme violence, but the light on the miner’s helmet as the killer gazes out at the audience. The extreme violence, foul language, sex, and nudity make for an abhorrent combination.

More Detail:

Audiences should probably know what they are getting with an R-rated horror movie that’s made in one of the two new 3D processes. MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D delivers all that, and it also contains a totally naked blonde woman running around for about 10 minutes. The extreme nude scene destroys what little credibility the rest of the movie tries to build with an attempt at providing a more interesting plot with more interesting characters. The movie is already playing to the lowest common denominator with plenty of graphic, R-rated horror violence. The extreme nude scene shows that the filmmakers are really just interested in the shock value they can generate while trying to put live bodies into theater seats.

The movie opens in a small coal town in Pennsylvania. The lone survivor of a mine accident, Harry Warden, is in a coma. A year later, Harry comes out of the coma, slaughters all the people on his hospital floor, then dons a miner’s outfit and starts chopping up some teenagers partying down at the mine entrance. Four teenagers survive, but one of them, Tom, barely misses having his hair parted by Harry’s bloody pickaxe. The old sheriff eventually shoots Harry in the mine, but his body is never found.

Ten years later, Tom returns to the town following his rich father’s death. He intends to shut down his father’s mine, putting the town out of business. Everyone resents this, including his ex-girlfriend, Sarah. In the wake of Tom’s disappearance 10 years ago, Sarah married Tom’s rival, Axel, who’s now the town sheriff. Despite their young son, Axel is cheating on Sarah.

Suddenly, with Tom’s reappearance, another series of similar murders occurs. Suspicion falls on Tom and Axel as both men fight for Sarah’s love. Who can she really trust?

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D doesn’t always go for the gore. Instead, it tries to build in a little suspense and mystery. Also, the love triangle between the three lead characters is a little more involved than the typical horror flick.

Even so, the movie has some awkward lines and awkward acting moments. Then, of course, there are the movie’s gory and extremely violent scenes, along with some explicit sexual content between two minor characters where the female spends about 10 minutes completely in the nude while running away from the killer.

The violent scenes are not quite as graphic as many other R-rated horror movies, but the extensive nude scene is likely to garner MY BLOODY VALENTINE some notoriety. The most clever 3D effect is not the extreme violence, but the light on the miner’s helmet as the killer gazes out at the audience. Needless to say, the extreme violence, foul language, sex, and nudity make for an abhorrent combination.
