FANBOYS

What You Need To Know:

Set in 1998, FANBOYS is an homage to the STAR WARS movie franchise by George Lucas. Five friends journey across country to the famed Skywalker Ranch to steal an early copy of STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE. When they learn that one of their friends is going to die from cancer a few months before the theatrical opening of the famed series’ prequel, they set out to break into Skywalker Ranch so they can make his last wish come true. Along their journey, they run from the police, are forced to strip dance in a homosexual bar, smoke peyote with a Native American and have visions of Ewoks, and get into a hilarious scuffle with STAR TREK fans.

As one big “inside joke” to STAR WARS fans, FANBOYS is sometimes funny. Ultimately, however, the movie’s crude content journeys to the dark side and eclipses the story’s force, despite a heartwarming ending. The movie is filled with crude sexual jokes (including strong homosexual content) and strong foul language. Thus, true STAR WARS fans will want to ignore FANBOYS. Content:

(PaPa, HoHo, FR, LLL, V, SS, NN, AA, DD, MM) Mostly mixed, strong pagan worldview with strong homosexual elements including a scene in a gay bar where the lead characters are forced to strip to a group of homosexual bikers, some humorous references to the Zen-like elements of the Force, the fictional religion used in the STAR WARS movies; 60 obscenities, 23 profanities, three crude gestures, and some scatological humor; some comedic violence includes wrestling, some slapping, chase sequences and a very funny brawl between STAR WARS fans and STAR TREK fans; sexual content includes some crude, graphic sexual dialogue, unmarried kissing, lead characters make a lot of sexual gestures, a scene in a homosexual strip club where characters are made to strip, and an improper internet relationship with a young woman; nudity includes upper male nudity, men in underwear, rear male and rear female nudity and woman in bikini; alcohol and beer consumption, with some light drunkenness in party scene; some smoking and drug use as lead characters get high on peyote with a Native American chief; lying, breaking and entering, and running from the police.

More Detail:

FANBOYS is an ode to the STAR WARS movie franchise. As one big “inside joke” to STAR WARS fans, the movie is sometimes funny. Ultimately, however, the movie’s crude content journeys to the dark side and eclipses the story’s force.

Set in 1998, five friends journey across country to the famed Skywalker Ranch to steal an early copy of STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE. When they learn that one of their friends is going to die from cancer a few months before the theatrical opening of the famed series’ prequel, they set out to break into Skywalker Ranch so they can make his last wish come true.

Along their journey, the friends go on the run from the police, are forced to strip dance in a homosexual bar, smoke peyote with a Native American and have visions of Ewoks, and get into a hilarious scuffle with STAR TREK fans. The movie does contain a heartwarming ending that emphasizes the bonds of friendship, but it hardly outweighs the movie’s flaws.

Filled with bizarre situations that could only happen in a galaxy far, far away, FANBOYS has a lot of storytelling problems as well as characters that seem stuck in a sophomoric state of cognitive development. Dramatically, the movie fails in almost every way except as a sometimes-hilarious ode to STAR WARS fans, but even that falls far below the epic scope of George Lucas’ mythical vision.

The movie’s content also does not do justice to the saga. It is filled with crude, sexual jokes, including strong homosexual content, as well as strong foul language and some drug use. Thus, true fans of the STAR WARS movie would be well served to ignore FANBOYS and enjoy more worthwhile entertainment.
