Shot in documentary style, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY has some clever scary moments, but it takes too long to get to the meat of the conflict between the demon and this misguided couple. In fact, both of these characters seem to be really stupid. Finally, in the end, the demon is victorious. Thus, the foul-mouthed PARANORMAL ACTIVITY becomes abhorrent and demonic in and of itself.

(OOO, ABAB, LLL, VV, S, N, MM) Very strong occult, demonic, psychic worldview where a demon is victorious, a psychic gives advice, and Christianity and exorcism are considered just as likely to make a demon more angry and, hence, even stronger as to defeat it; 51 obscenities (including many “f” words), four profanities mentioning Jesus, one GD profanity, 10 light exclamatory profanities such as My God, and several obscene gestures used for comic effect; strong scary violence includes invisible demon drags woman into dark hallway, invisible demon leaves footprints in talcum powder, character is thrown against a wall, demon possessed character makes lunge at a camera that viewers are watching the movie through, demon makes lots of loud sounds to scare two people, invisible demon uses fire to etch a message into a Ouija board, invisible demon moves covers in a bed while two people are sleeping; implied sex in bedroom scene between unmarried coupled living together and movie’s two main characters live together and sleep together; upper male nudity and woman in short pajama shorts; no alcohol; no smoking; and, unmarried couple living together argue, man verbally persuades and verbally bullies woman into doing things she doesn’t want to do even when she is clearly right, man violates his word to his girlfriend, and couple lets themselves succumb to demonic activity through their stupidity and ignorance.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY is a low budget occult movie about ghosts, poltergeists and demonology that is getting some buzz because of its style, which is reminiscent of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Like that earlier movie, however, evil is victorious in the end, so the buzz should eventually die out.
Shot in a documentary style, the movie opens with a young man named Micah greeting his live-in girlfriend, Katie, one day with the new expensive camera he’s bought. He explains to her that he wants to record the paranormal activities that seem to be following her. Katie is afraid, however, that the camera will only aggravate the spirit that seems to be haunting her.
Of course, she turns out to be right, but Micah keeps using the camera, even when a psychic tells them that they are actually being haunted by a demon. He recommends a demonologist to help them, but Micah convinces Katie that he and the camera can handle a stupid demon.
As the demon increases its haunting efforts, the tension between Micah and Katie increases. It becomes clear that Micah resents that Katie did not tell him she’s been haunted for years by this supernatural being.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY has some clever scary moments, but it takes too long to get to the meat of the conflict between the demon and this misguided couple. Also, both of these young people seem to be as stupid as all get-out when it comes to protecting themselves from demonic activity. Finally, in the end, the demon is victorious. Thus, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY becomes abhorrent and demonic in and of itself.
As C.S. Lewis noted long ago, there are two mistakes people can make when it comes to Satan and his demons. The first mistake is not taking them seriously enough. The second mistake is thinking that they are more powerful than they really are, especially when compared to Jesus Christ, Lord of Lord and King of Kings. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY commits both of these mistakes. Clearly, the demonic is nothing to sneer at, but Jesus Christ has the ultimate power in both Heaven and this universe.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY also contains an excessive amount of gratuitous foul language. Were it not for the strong foul language, the movie could have been rated PG-13.
