Movieguide® Teddy Bear Award® nominee UNCHARTED is back on top of the streaming charts.
The Tom Holland-Mark Wahlberg-led movie boasts the No. 2 spot on Amazon Prime Video’s top 10 movies chart for the U.S. Last week, the video game-inspired flick sat at No. 6, according to MovieWeb.
The movie follows Nathan Drake (Holland) who has been recruited by a veteran treasure hunter, Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Wahlberg), to find a “fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada.”
Inspired by the video game also called “Uncharted,” the movie shares many similarities to the IP fans already love.
“We created a film that has a lot of heart, that pays respect to the games, but also gives fans and people who love the games something new and something refreshing,” Holland said during the movie’s press tour in 2022. “It’s interesting in these big action movies, I often find that the heart and soul of the movie can be lost in the action. But what’s so nice about our movie is you have this very tangible relationship between Nate and [his mentor] Sully, which is really the heart of the movie…It’s about a young orphan looking for his family and in turn finding a family in the most sort of unorthodox way.”
Movieguide® praised the film’s strong pro-life worldview and redemptive themes.
Holland discovered his love for the game while filming SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.
“One of the luxuries of making these SPIDER-MAN movies is they’re made by Sony. One of the luxuries of working for Sony is PlayStation. So all the actors trailers were outfitted with the best TVs and the newest PlayStation — and one of the games they’d given me was UNCHARTED,” he said.
“I remember them trying to drag me out of my trailer to come back to set. I was like, ‘No, no, no, we’re about to complete this mission,’” he continued. “We had a conversation about the idea of making this into a movie and bringing it to life on the big screen. And here we are today.”
Following its Feb. 18, 2022 release, UNCHARTED nearly made $84 million by the end of the month. Before it exited the theater, the film garnered $407 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Though UNCHARTED 2 is in the works, few details have been released, and since Holland has his hands full with a slew of other projects, it likely will be several years out.
But one thing’s for sure. Fans can’t wait to seen more of Nathan Drake and Sully’s treasure hunting adventures.
