4 New Movies We Can’t Wait to See in Theaters

By Movieguide® Staff

After a chaotic 2020, here are some of the new uplifting movies that Movieguide® is excited for coming in 2021! It should be noted that we have not seen these movies yet, so check back to the site before these releases for the full reviews.

  1. AMERICAN UNDERDOG: THE KURT WARNER STORY (December 10, 2021)

Zachary Levi will star as the former NFL two-time MVP and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner in the upcoming biopic AMERICAN UNDERDOG: THE KURT WARNER STORY. Jon and Andy Erwin are directing and producing the movie under their Kingdom Story Company alongside Mark Ciardi and Kevin Downes.

“Kurt’s story is one of relentless faith – in his own abilities but even more so in a higher power,” Levi said. “When I read Kurt’s story, I identified with the quiet strength he found to persevere – that’s something I think anybody can recognize in their own lives. This is the kind of underdog story that sports movies are all about, and the fact that it’s true makes it even more special. I’m thrilled to be part of bringing his story to audiences.”

Levi is a successful actor and is accustomed to bringing inspiring, family-friendly roles to life on the big screen.

He starred in Disney’s 2011 animated musical TANGLED, the 2018 Movieguide®’s Epiphany Prize® for Inspiring Movies winner THE STAR, and the 2019 blockbuster hit SHAZAM!.

The Erwin Brothers are directors well known for faith-based content. They directed the 2018 film I CAN ONLY IMAGINE—which won the Epiphany Prize® for Inspiring Movies at the 2019 Movieguide® Awards—and 2020’s I STILL BELIEVE.

  1. UNBREAKABLE BOY (Release date unannounced)

Christian filmmakers Jon and Andrew Erwin also announced that they started casting their upcoming movie called THE UNBREAKABLE BOY

THE UNBREAKABLE BOY follows the true story of Iowan Austin LeRette, whose father, Scott, chronicled his son’s struggles and faith in the book “The Unbreakable Boy.”

The story is about a boy named Austin (Laval) who is born with both a rare brittle-bone disease and autism. Despite Austin’s circumstances, the boy remains joyous, funny, and optimistic about life, inspiring his parents to walk through life with him.

The faith-based company is engaged in a long-term partnership with Lionsgate to provide “event-level entertainment for audiences of faith.”

The Erwin brothers, alongside producers Jerilyn Esquibel, Kevin Downes, and Peter Facinelli, are joined by writer and director Jon Gunn, who previously worked on this year’s inspirational faith-based movie I STILL BELIEVE. Gunn also directed THE CASE FOR CHRIST.

The movie will also feature actor Zachary Levi and Patricia Heaton.

Producers Cindy Bond (I CAN ONLY IMAGINE) and Roma Downey (THE BIBLE) announced the cast for their movie adaptation of Francine Rivers’ allegorical novel “Redeeming Love.”

Bond produced the project through her Mission Pictures International label alongside David A.R. White and Brittany Yost for Pure Flix Entertainment.

The novel is based on the Old Testament book Hosea.

Like the novel, the movie is a period piece, set in the mid 1800s that follows the protagonist, Angel (Abigail Cowen of I STILL BELIEVE), who gets sold into prostitution as a child. Years later as an adult, Angel marries a man named Michael Hosea (Tom Lewis of TV’s GENTLEMAN JACK), who trusts in God’s direction to cultivate a life with Angel.

While REDEEMING LOVE doesn’t have a theatrical rating yet, filmmakers are aware of the sensitive nature of the story.

Director D.J. Caruso told Deadline, “While many are victims of horrible circumstances that will haunt them forever, some characters are able to overcome the pain, the sorrow and the brutality to discover how remarkable they truly are.”

He continued, “Angel’s journey reminds us that healing happens through love and acceptance, never through judgment or force.”

  1. REAGAN (Release date unannounced)

Dennis Quaid announced that Penelope Ann Miller will play the Nancy to his Ronald in the upcoming Ronald Regan biopic titled REAGAN, also starring Jon Voight. The movie is currently in production in Oklahoma.

SOUL SURFER‘s Sean McNamara will direct with NO SAFE SPACE‘s Mark Joseph producing.

Quaid also starred in SOUL SURFER and was nominated at the 2012 Movieguide® Awards Gala and Report to the Entertainment Industry for the Grace Award for Most Inspiring Performance of 2011.

SOUL SURFER was also nominated for the Epiphany Prize® for Most Inspiring Movie.

Jonas McCord and Howard Klausner adapted the REAGAN script from books The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism and God and Ronald Reagan: A Spiritual Life, both written by conservative author Paul Kengor.

McCord directed THE BODY, which won the $25,000 John Templeton Foundation Epiphany Prize for Most Inspiring Movie of 2001.
