By Movieguide® Contributor
Laughter is the best medicine, but it can be challenging to find clean humor today. These Christian comedians are vocal about their faith and their relationship with the Lord. Whether it’s a church joke or observational humor, you’ll be laughing in no time. From funny veterans like Chonda Pierce to up-and-coming comedians like Nate Bargatze, these are five clean comedians you don’t want to miss.
Leanne Morgan
Leanne Morgan is a 57-year-old Southern grandma who pontificates on motherhood, marriage and everything in between. She’s a Christian and speaks openly about how faith inspires her comedy. Her no-nonsense delivery and hilarious stories about her family will have you in stitches.
“Right before I walk on the stage I say, ‘God, somebody needs to laugh today. Please let me be a blessing,’” Morgan told Christianity Today.
“There was a time when I thought fame would be fun,” she said, “But now other things encourage me. People come up to me and tell me I helped them get through chemo, or the pandemic, or their husband’s death. It wasn’t about me, but they were able to escape life for a bit.”
“I think God wants us to laugh and to have a good time. He wants us to be hopeful.”
Nate Bargatze
Nate Bargatze is a breath of fresh air, delivering clean comedy for over 20 years. His act is made up of comedic anecdotes about his family and funny life experiences. He told Fox News that his parents inspired his comedy style.
“I just can’t imagine cursing in front of your parents,” he said. “Still, even now, I’m 43 years old, and I still just couldn’t do that. So that’s how I write.’
“I think I write my comedy too — a lot of it is to make my parents laugh. I want them to be proud and be like, ‘Oh, come watch my son do comedy,’ and not be offended by it. I just don’t have that in me to want to offend someone or make someone feel bad.”
Chonda Pierce
Chonda Pierce is a hilarious comedian dubbed “The Queen of Clean.” Her perspectives on the world and observations about church life will bring a smile to your face. She’s channeled her humor into a positive message that fans can’t get enough of.
“I always tell people, ‘I remember the taste of Ivory soap, so I don’t do any cussing.’ I grew up, I’m a born-again Christian.”
“I grew up in the church world. It’s who I am. It would be so foreign for me to get up and throw out the F-bomb. I would think my mother would come from the grave and slap me,” Pierce told the Gaston Gazette.
Tim Hawkins
Tim Hawkins is known for his musical parodies that will have you rolling with laughter. The Missouri native is laugh-out-loud funny and likes to keep his comedy real and relatable. Hawkins believes there is a relationship between God and laughter.
“I think joy is that thing that God brings to the table, that is a deeper connection with Him, where you don’t just laugh to forget, but you can say a message, or say brief testimony, or whatever I’m going through spiritually this is who I am,” he told the Christian Post.
“People today they’re not into real nice, perfect packaging. They just want real. I just love God I always have. I always thought He was the greatest.”
John Crist
John Crist is a clean comedian who was canceled for a sexual misconduct scandal. After going to rehab and reevaluating his life, he returned with gusto to entertain the masses. Crist takes on political correctness and makes light of the absurdities of life. Despite weathering personal scandals, Crist hopes to bridge communities with laughter.
“I think the local church is our only hope,” he told The Christian Post. “A lot of the stuff that divides us are the walls I’m trying to bring down to bring us all together.
“If comedy is done appropriately, that’s the goal that should serve. We don’t hit the mark every time, obviously, we swing and miss every now and then, but it’s part of the game.”
