Actress Taraji P. Henson Values Daily Connection With God

HIDDEN FIGURES star Taraji P. Henson joined the “Jesus Calling Podcast” to discuss why she values daily connection with God.
“You have to connect with God daily. I don’t feel right unless I do,” Henson explained. “I read in the morning before I start my day, and I read at night before I close my eyes. And I’m in constant communication with God all day because something is always going to try you. You know, it’s life, you never know what’s going to happen at any moment. So I keep God close to me at all times, and I’m constantly in communication with God at all times. I’m nothing without God, like, the fact that I’m here? I’m blessed and I know why.”
Henson also has a passion “to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health in black and brown communities.”
She does this through her foundation, The Boris Lawrence Jenson Foundation.
“BLHF actively promotes mental wellness and strives to eradicate stigmatizing language surrounding mental illness through impactful programs, awareness campaigns, and educational initiatives,” the website reads.
“We are all uniquely different. God did an amazing thing by putting us on this earth,” Henson said. “We’re all humans and we all look different. And it is our charge, as humans on this earth, to learn how to get along. That is what we’ve been put here to do.”
Henson recently wrote a children’s book called, “You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!)” which focuses on on loving everyone regardless of what they look like.
A synopsis of the book reads:
In this debut picture book from Taraji P. Henson, quirky, stylish and a bit off-the-cuff Lil TJ is ready for her first day of school. But when she gets there, TJ finds that everything she does is a little different than everyone else and she’s standing out in all the wrong ways. Once TJ’s classmate Beau notices, he relentlessly teases her. TJ is filled with anxiety and doubt until she recalls some important words of wisdom from her Grandma Patsy. When she looks inside to her own creativity and personality, she figures out how to help herself make new friends! —and helps someone else too!
The purpose of Henson’s book is “to promote mental wellness to kids while teaching important socialization skills,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
Movieguide® previously reported on Henson:
Taraji P. Henson recently gave a commencement address at Howard University and encouraged the graduates to rely on their faith.
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase. It just means your faith is bigger than that fear,” the actress said. “Because fear is there to distract you. That’s its only purpose. It makes you waste time. Fear makes you spin your wheels trying to figure out if you belong.”
In a statement about her commencement address, Henson said, “Returning to Howard always feels like coming home, and I cannot wait to share this incredible moment with Howard students as they prepare to take the next step in their journeys to success.”
