Adrian Grenier addressed his absence from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 in a hilarious new commercial.
“You might have seen the headlines — I wasn’t asked to be part of a certain sequel,” the actor, who played Nate, the chef boyfriend to Anne Hathaway’s Andy, says in a new Starbucks commercial. “But I’m good. Really. It’s all good energy.”
The camera pans out to show Grenier standing at a Starbucks counter with the company’s Energy Refresher drink.
“So a toast to Nate!” he said. “He made a mean sandwich, he loved his girlfriend, to a point. He wasn’t perfect. So let’s leave Nate in 2006 and keep this good energy going.”

Before the commercial ends, Grenier jokes, “I mean, if they call, I’m free.”
The actor has previously spoken about not being a part of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2, telling PEOPLE, “I spoke to David Frankel, the director recently…I was disappointed… But, you know, apparently, my character is a controversial character, so he might need his own spinoff.”
Grenier also addressed some fans’ opinions that his character was the “real villain” of the movie, with many saying that his lack of support for Andy and her job — as well as a memorable scene where he complains about her missing his birthday party — made him a bad boyfriend.
“I can understand the sentiment,” he said, then joked, “But I have to stand [up] for my character. If Nate is actually the devil in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, I’d like to see what his character does beyond, as a spinoff movie.”
In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Grenier added, “All those memes that came out were shocking to me. It hadn’t occurred to me until I started to really think about it, and perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time, and in many ways he’s very selfish and self-involved, it was all about him, he wasn’t extending himself to support Andy in her career.”
He continued, “But after time to reflect and much deliberation, I’ve come to realize the truth in that perspective.”
Hathaway has also weighed in on Nate, telling Andy Cohen on WATCH WHAT HAPPENS LIVE that she doesn’t think he’s “a villain.”
“I think that they were both very young, and figuring things out,” she continued. “He did behave like a brat, but I also behaved like a brat in my 20s and I hopefully grew out of it. I think that that’s what we all do. And I wouldn’t want to be defined by my worst moment in my 20s, certainly, so I don’t hold Nate as a villain, actually.”
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 premieres May 1.
