For Alexa and Carlos PenaVega, their different personalities come with some challenges, but they’ve learned to love each other through them.

“In marriage, I’m not very sensitive, but Carlos is very sensitive. God bless him,” Alexa said on the “Two Be Continued” podcast. “So, he can say something to me that could seem like — if I said it to him, he’d be like, ‘That was really harsh.’ So, like, if…he’s like, ‘Oh, do you like this?’ I’m like, ‘No.’ [He’s] like, ‘What? Like you just said no?’ Like, ‘Well, no. You asked me.’”

“It’s very harsh,” Carlos laughed. “It hurts.”

But what her husband views as harsh, Alexa appreciates as being direct.

“‘Do you like this, yes or no?’ And he’s like, ‘No.’ I’m like, ‘Thank you. Great.’ That’s all like, because I just want…the answer,” Alexa said.

Carlos went on to explain that even when it comes to showing excitement, they have some major differences.

“Literally, [we’ll] go on a cruise. And…I walk into our room, and I’ll be like, ‘How amazing is this room?’ And she’s like, ‘That’s awesome.’ I’m like, ‘It’s awesome? This is incredible!’” he said.

Being married in Hollywood comes with challenges, too. The PenaVegas recently shared how competing against each other on DANCING WITH THE STARS in 2015 tested them in ways they didn’t expect. They had just gotten married the year before.

Carlos admitted that he felt “jealous” of the time Alexa was spending with pro Mark Ballas but said it was a “blessing” he and his wife were on the show together.

“It was a blessing because I think if [Alexa] had done that show without me, I would have been at home watching TV and all the rehearsals and been like, ‘You’re spending 12 hours with this guy?’” he said.

“I loved the show, but because Carlos was not at the time where he is now with his level of comfort — there were just insecurities — that made my experience so much harder,” Alexa explained. “I wasn’t able to really focus the way I wanted to. That’s the part of marriage where I wish at the time I was a little better at communicating.”

She added, “It would be so much more fun if we got a do-over. It’s tough on your marriage, that show.”

They’ve gone through hard time since, including the stillbirth of their daughter Indy in 2024.

“It sounds nuts because it’s the worst thing that ever happened in my life,” Alexa said of how Indy made their lives better.

“[God] just completely used this awful experience and situation and He showed us so much good through it,” Carlos said.

The PenaVegas’ marriage is a good reminder that trusting God and embracing your spouse’s differences can only strengthen your relationship.
