As Amazon works to consolidate its streaming services, it plans to shutter its free streamer Freevee in August and will migrate all of its content onto Prime Video.
“Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV,” a notice to Freevee users now reads when accessing the platform, per Tech Crunch. “The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite Free Originals and our library of hit movies, shows and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.”
The shutdown of the service isn’t a surprise. Amazon announced last November that it would roll Freevee into Prime Video in 2025.
“We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST Channels and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering,” an Amazon spokesperson said at the time.
“To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding,” they continued. “There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels — all available on Prime Video.”
Now that the shutdown of Freevee is officially here, an Amazon spokesperson reiterated that the rollover onto Prime Video will have no effect on the free content available, nor will it impact Prime Video subscribers.
Introducing ads to Prime Video in 2024 contributes to Freevee’s shutdown as it allows the platform to host free content that Amazon could still cash in on.
The introduction of ads onto the platform was certainly lucrative for the company as it is predicted to generate an additional $7.1 billion per year by 2026. Adding Freevee content to the site should further boost this revenue and allow Amazon to collect even more money from its streaming platform.
Meanwhile, Prime Video remains committed to releasing high-quality content that oftentimes ends up including Christian themes. Some of the platforms most popular shows include REACHER, LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER and HOUSE OF DAVID. It is encouraging just how committed to edifying content the company is even as its competitors continue to push immoral shows and movies.
