Netflix’s STEPS will put a new spin on the classic Cinderella story as Cinderella is forced to team up with her step-sister, Lilith, to save the kingdom from evil.
“This story is, at its core, about two very different sisters — one who fits perfectly into this fairy tale kingdom and one who doesn’t — realizing they’re more alike than different,” explained director Alyce Tzue. “It’s such a personal story for me because, growing up as an awkward, artsy Taiwanese kid in suburban New Jersey, I often felt like an outsider, like ‘happily ever after’ wasn’t meant for me.”
“I wanted to create a film for everyone who has ever felt like they didn’t belong – and show how a single act of kindness can change everything,” Tzue added.

This movie is exciting for families as it appears to promote positive morals that children can learn from as the characters are not only forced to overcome their differences, but also give show each other grace as Cinderella and her sister look past their bumpy history. Seeing this movie come from Netflix is encouraging as the streamer does not always fill its kids content with messaging that is good for its young viewers.
Meanwhile, family-friendly content remains the most popular shows and movies, consistently outperforming any other genre across the board. Movieguide®’s research has found again and again that Hollywood should focus more on the family audience, rather than continue to create excessive, R-rated movies. In 2023, Movieguide® found that “the most family-friendly movies earned five times more money than the least family-friendly movies.”
“There’s a stigma that PG is just for kids, but they appeal to everyone,” explained senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian, per Variety. “It’s like comfort food. People know they won’t be bombarded with too much violence or language. It’s wholesome. There’s no shame in going to a PG movie if it’s good.”
These family-friendly movies, however, need to be full of moral lessons and an uplifting story in order to truly be successful. Disney’s LIGHTYEAR, for example, was a horrible flop, despite being aimed at kids, because it only served to promote the LGBTQ+ agenda, rather than promoting morals that are Biblically sound.
STEPS has the ability to go in the right direction and ground its principles in Biblical morality. However, given Netflix’s past, it remains to be seen if it will instead promote lessons that are not safe for children. Hopefully the streamer will choose the former and deliver a movie that connects with families around the world. STEPS is set to release sometime next year.
