Boston Celtics Al Horford Wins First NBA Championship: ‘Glory to God’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Boston Celtics center, Al Horford, has played int he NBA for 17 years. Every year, Horford would have his eyes set on the big prize, an NBA title.
Per Sports Spectrum, “Horford, a native of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds on Monday. He hit two of his three 3-pointers and nabbed two steals, and Boston outscored Dallas by 20 when Horford was on the floor (tied for the second most on the team).”
Finally, after 17 years, Horford has achieved his goal.
“It’s been long, a lot of hard work, but I’m so proud to be part of this team and that it happened now,” Horford said after the game. “La gloria a Dios! Gloria a Dios!”
Those words in Spanish translate to “Glory to God.”
Later during the post game press conference, Horford continued to give the glory back to God.
“Man, I’m so grateful,” he declared. “I know I’ve said it before but it’s glory to the Lord for me, for putting me in this position. It’s been a lot of years. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.”
This isn’t the first time Horford has spoken of his faith. Back in May when the Celtics advanced to the third round of the playoffs Horford shared, “I have to give glory to the Lord.”
“Tonight was a special night,” he continued. “We had this chance to close it out here at home, and for me, the biggest thing was just bringing energy, bringing energy to our group.”
Head coach Joe Mazzulla says Horford has the respect of all of his teammates.
“Any time he speaks, everybody listens, because of his humility, his selflessness, and his leadership, always looking to make the right play,” Mazzulla said.
Celtics point guard, Jayson Tatum agrees.
“[Horford is] my favorite teammate of all time,” Tatum declared. “He’s the guy that paved the way for a lot of us, and it means the world to share this with him.”
