Chiefs Owner Praises God After Third Super Bowl Win in 5 Years

By Movieguide® Contributor

Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt thanked God during his third Lombardi Trophy acceptance speech and fourth appearance at the Super Bowl in five years.

“It’s been an amazing five-year run,” Hunt said onstage after the game. “I want to thank the Lord for giving us this opportunity.”

The epic championship match between the Chiefs and the 49ers was the most-watched football game of all time, requiring overtime to determine a winner. After the 49ers kicked a field goal on their opening drive of overtime, the Chiefs responded with a 13-play drive that resulted in a 3-yard pass for the season-ending touchdown.

By winning this year’s game, the Chiefs are the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Patriots did it in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and are the ninth team to do so in the NFL’s 104-year history.

With all eyes on this historic team, many players have taken the opportunity to redirect the focus to God rather than take it for themselves. Hunt is largely to thank for this, as he has focused his franchise’s culture on faith.

“We want our employees to develop spiritually,” Hunt told the Tyler Morning Telegraph in 2019. “In the National Football League, Christ is really glorified. My identity is my faith in Christ.”

“In our family, it’s faith, family and football, and in that order,” Hunt added before last year’s Super Bowl. “That’s a challenge, but it’s something we really focus on as a family and it’s the No. 1 thing in our lives.”

The Chiefs are led spiritually by a team chaplain who encourages the Christian players in their walk with God while also being a resource for those interested in Christianity. Because faith is such a focus for the team, many players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, kicker Harrison Butker and even the team’s mascot, boldly proclaim their faith.

The franchise also takes care of its Christian fans, organizing pre-game chapel services available for anyone to attend during the regular season.

As the Chiefs continue to make history, it is amazing to see so many of its prominent players and staff shine the spotlight on God and keep Him in the forefront.

Movieguide® previously reported on the Chiefs’ faith:

Kansas City Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes, Jawaan Taylor and Noah Gray are just a few team members who openly share about their faith that guides them on and off the field.

“I just gotta give God the glory,” Mahomes said fresh from the team’s 25-22 victory against the San Francisco 49ers at the Super Bowl LVIII game.

The quarterback earned his third Super Bowl MVP award. Only legendary quarterbacks Joe Montana and Tom Brady have won that many. Brady has won five.

“My faith has helped me become a better person. I suddenly become a better leader, a better role model, and something that I live by every single day,” Mahomes said in a video posted by God Behind Bars, a prison outreach ministry.

“[God has] always been the answer. Anybody who believes, man, you know, you can’t make it without Him,” starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor told the ministry that streamed his and other Chiefs’ players’ interviews to over 1,000,000 inmates through Pandoapp in hopes of reaching that population for Christ.
