Kansas City Chiefs Players Give God Glory After Super Bowl Win

Kansas City Chiefs Players Give God Glory After Super Bowl Win

By Movieguide® Contributor

Kansas City Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes, Jawaan Taylor and Noah Gray are just a few team members who openly share about their faith that guides them on and off the field.

“I just gotta give God the glory,” Mahomes said fresh from the team’s 25-22 victory against the San Francisco 49ers at the Super Bowl LVIII game.

The quarterback earned his third Super Bowl MVP award. Only legendary quarterbacks Joe Montana and Tom Brady have won that many. Brady has won five.

“My faith has helped me become a better person. I suddenly become a better leader, a better role model, and something that I live by every single day,” Mahomes said in a video posted by God Behind Bars, a prison outreach ministry.

“[God has] always been the answer. Anybody who believes, man, you know, you can’t make it without Him,” starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor told the ministry that streamed his and other Chiefs’ players’ interviews to over 1,000,000 inmates through Pandoapp in hopes of reaching that population for Christ.

Taylor’s first Super Bowl win was bittersweet as his grandmother died recently.

“My grandmother passed away about three or four days ago, so I’m dedicating this game to her,” Taylor said days before the big game. “My father passed away two years ago. Those guys — my grandma and my dad — they are a very big reason why I’m here and a very big reason why I made it to this point.”

Tight end Noah Gray also shared faith’s role in his life.

“I really lean on Him in every aspect of my life and the fact that he, you know, he redeemed us through his death and resurrection on the cross. It’s just everything,” Gray said.

Those behind the team that won the first back-to-back Super Bowls since 2004 also celebrate their faith. One of those is Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

“Maria and I, my wife and I are very grounded Christians. She’s the best example in my life, of how to lead a Christian life,” Spagnuolo stated. “And so we try to make that the foundation of everything we do and what we’re involved in. And quite frankly, you couldn’t get through the ups and downs of NFL football during the season if you didn’t have that.”

At the Super Bowl Lombardi trophy ceremony, the Chiefs’ owner, Clark Hunt, thanked God. Hunt has expressed his desire for his employers to “develop spiritually” and said, “In the National Football League, Christ is really glorified. My identity is my faith in Christ.”

Movieguide® recently reported on the faith of 10 players—the Chiefs’ team as well as their rivals, the San Francisco 49ers. Here’s a snippet of the article:

2. Christian McCaffrey: Running back for the San Francisco 49ers.

This will be McCaffrey’s first Super Bowl appearance. “My faith means everything to me. I think my faith has gotten me where I am in life,” he said

3. L’Jarius Sneed: Cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sneed is making his third Super Bowl appearance with one win under his belt. “God, I thank You,” he posted before the AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens.

4. Brock Purdy: Quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

Purdy will make his Super Bowl debut and has relied on Psalm 23 to get him through this season. “I already have what I need from the Good Shepherd in Jesus,” he said
