Danny Gokey encouraged his fans to let their ego to fall to the wayside and focus on the Lord’s opinion rather than working hard to impress others.

“If we let go of our egos, we’ll let go of a lot of stress,” Gokey said. “If you would let go of the need to impress people – you’re just living your best life. You live your best life.”

Gokey has long encouraged his fans to make God their number one priority and allow everything else to fall into place according to His plan. The singer has experienced that in his own life, landing a record deal and becoming a professional musician after placing third on his season of AMERICAN IDOL.

“I want to challenge you today, if there is any other thing that takes the place of God, your life will be in a very uncomfortable, very crooked place,” Gokey said in February when he was discussing the book of Job. “But if you begin to put God first, even when family members leave you, when people hurt you and when people die, it won’t devastate you. You’ll still be in a place of hope because you understand that God gives all things richly to be in joy. As long as you got Him, you have everything.”

Gokey understands just how important this hope can be, losing his first wife during a heart surgery before they had turned 25. However, he kept from getting derailed by this tragedy by clinging to the Lord and trusting that He redeems all things.

“I remember I got to the point where she was gone. I just felt at such a complete loss. And once again, that all-familiar thing, the fear… came back into my life. This time because she ended up passing away, I literally felt in my heart like…God is mad at me,” Gokey said while sharing his testimony.

“There was this verse that kept coming around and it was coming in the most random places, Psalm 46:10. And it said, ‘Be still and know that I am God.’ What does this mean? Do I just need to calm myself down and say, ‘You are God?’ I literally would try that and yet nothing would work,” he continued.

After digging into the verse, Gokey came to realize it was encouraging him to trust God and stop fighting Him and being angry with Him. Slowly but surely, he came to have peace about his wife’s death. He now uses his platform to share the things he has learned through his walk in faith and continues encourages his fans to take their faith more seriously and work to build up their relationship with God as well.
