Angel Studios’ DAVID scored $70.1 million at the domestic box office.

The movie, which released last month, has made more than RUNNING MAN, I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and THE LONG WALK, Crosswalk reported. It also surpassed THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SEARCH FOR SQUAREPANTS, which shows families’ preference for wholesome content.

It currently has a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. So far, it’s only grossed $300k in international markets, but it will release in 44 countries over the next year.

The synopsis reads, “From the songs of his mother’s heart to the whispers of a faithful God, David’s story begins in quiet devotion. When the giant Goliath rises to terrorize a nation, a young shepherd armed with only a sling, a few stones, and unshakable faith steps forward. Pursued by power and driven by purpose, his journey tests the limits of loyalty, love, and courage – culminating in a battle not just for a crown, but for the soul of a kingdom.”

It broke a record as the highest-grossing faith-based animated theatrical opening of all time, beating KING OF KINGS, with $22 million in its opening weekend, Fox 13 Now reported. It’s also Angel’s best movie opening ever.

The movie is a follow-up to Angel’s miniseries, YOUNG DAVID. It is directed by Phil Cunningham and Brent Daws and stars Christian singers Phil Wickham and Lauren Daigle.

“Families are searching for values-driven films that honor hope, and our Angel Guild members embraced DAVID from the very beginning. We greatly value the support of our outstanding exhibitors and look forward to a robust, extended theatrical run as this popular animated musical continues to warm hearts and inspire families this Christmas,” Brandon Purdie, Angel’s head of theatrical productions, said in a press release.

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads, “DAVID is an entertaining, stirring, heartwarming biblical tale of David as he matures. Displaying a powerful biblical worldview, DAVID is a shining example of Scripture filmed artfully for the big screen, with next-level animation and engaging music. The story sticks to the Bible, often honors God, and has Christian allusions.”

Wickham, who sings hits like “The Jesus Way” and “House of the Lord,” had a difficult time nailing David’s voice.

“It took a second for me to set [aside] my preconceived notions of what my voice should sound like,” said Wickham, “just trying to sound like Brandon [young David] first off, but then also to realize I’m telling a story more than I’m trying to sing a song well. I’m trying to relay a moment, whether it’s grief or joy. And it was challenging for me as a singer because I just I’ve done it so many times with a different mindset.” After some trial and error, he nailed it.

DAVID will likely be in theaters for a few more weeks.
