Kathryn Hahn will officially star as Mother Gothel in the live action rendition of TANGLED.
Disney teased the confirmation in video on its socials, The Wrap reported on Tuesday.
“Hey! Uh, OOTD, just found out what that stands for,” the actress says to the camera. “So here’s my outfit of the day!”
The camera focuses on her Mother Gothel t-shirt.
The caption of the video, reads, “You want her to be the bad guy? FINE. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action TANGLED.”

The star also transitioned her Instagram bio to say, “mother knows best 🪞.” Her tag is also now “motherhahn.”
“We are all tangled up in excitement! ✨” Disney added, “Mother has arrived 💅.”
At one point, Scarlett Johansson was rumored to play Gothel, The Hollywood Reporter said. The movie also stars Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Disney Channel star Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider. Michael Gracey (THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, BETTER MAN) will direct and Jennifer Kaytin will write the screenplay. Lucy Kitada will executive produce.
Croft commented on Hahn sharing the video, “YAYY MAMAA.”
Donna Murphy, who voiced Gothel in the animation, said, “KATHRYN !! From one Mother to another…Congrats ! And remember… I love you MOST. ❤️👏🌟💋
Manheim previously shared that he’s nervous to play such a well-known role.
“I really respect Flynn in this movie, it’s one of my favorites. I’m kind of just nervous because I know that everybody loves Flynn and I’m trying to do my best at satisfying what people are expecting. But in another way, I can only be true to myself and try to embody the spirit of the cartoon,” he said.
TANGLED is a beloved Disney animated movie that grossed nearly $600 million worldwide.
Part of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads, “TANGLED is beautifully made, funny, exciting, delightful, and touching, especially the second half. The 3D is used to good effect without becoming overbearing.”
“A moral conflict is not completely resolved, however. In a way, Rapunzel rebels against the woman she thinks is her mother… Taken overall, this sacramental quality gives TANGLED strong redemptive symbols pointing metaphorically to Christian teachings.”
Disney’s recent live-actions, except for SNOW WHITE, have done extremely well at the box office, and this year’s live-action MOANA is expected to do the same. Last year’s LILO & STITCH brought in over $1 billion.
Disney hasn’t yet announced when TANGLED, the live-action movie, will be available in theaters.
