DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Writers Tapped For Monopoly Movie

Popular board game Monopoly is the latest beloved toy to score a movie deal.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the writers behind 2023’s DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOUR AMONG THIEVES, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, will be helming the project.
Daley and Goldstein have also previously worked on GAME NIGHT, THE FLASH, and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.
The untitled Monopoly movie will be produced by Lionsgate, LuckyChap, and Hasbro Entertainment.
“We knew LuckyChap would be a beacon for the best talent in town, and Lionsgate & Hasbro are thrilled that Goldstein & Daley have decided to join the fun,” said Erin Westerman, co-president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “We’ve been longtime admirers of their work — telling bold, original, intelligent stories for all audiences. They are the perfect architects for this franchise.”
It’s unsurprising Hasbro tapped Daley and Goldstein to write the Monopoly movie. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, also based on a popular board game, grossed over $208 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.
Hollywood has been trying to get a Monopoly movie made since 2007, when Ridley Scott expressed interest in directing a movie based on the toy.
“Monopoly is still the most popular board game — I might be misquoting! — in the world,” the GLADIATOR director told the Los Angeles Times at the time. “So it’s really finding the universe for that game. Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family…Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film.”

In 2011, the director got Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to write a script, but nothing came of it. In 2015, Lionsgate and Hasbro began working on a Monopoly project again. It was reported in 2019 that Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved in the project, but those plans also fizzled.
