ELIO is coming to Disney+ this September!
“The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking,” an official synopsis of the movie reads.
It continues, “Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.”
ELIO premiered in theaters this past June, and now, audiences can watch it at home. The movie hits Disney’s streaming service Sept. 17.
The film’s voice cast includes Yonas Kibreab as Elio Solís, Zoe Saldaña as Olga Solís, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brandon Moon as Helix, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon and Jameela Jamil as Questa.
Movieguide® praised ELIO for its “many comedic, action-packed, emotional elements,” as well as its “strong amount of moral, redemptive themes such as kindness, family bonds, love, and sacrifice, as well as allegorical death, baptism and resurrection.”
Some fans of the movie are even holding out hope for a sequel, including ELIO’s directors, Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi.
“We leave the door open,” Shi said of the possibility of a follow-up movie in an interview with ScreenRant. “Well, this is a spoiler for the end of the movie, but yeah, the universe is so vast, and the world of Elio is so rich. There are so many more aliens and planets we could visit.”
Sharafian added, “There were so many aliens we had to trim for time, characters with featured moments that were so funny.”
“They had whole backstories. They had families,” Shi explained. “I want to know about Glordon’s mom. The Blood Wars. There’s so much there. A whole story. So much more.”
There’s no official word yet on whether or not ELIO will be getting a sequel, but in the meantime, fans of the movie can finally stream it at home.
