A documentary about the making and legacy of GILMORE GIRLS is in production as the show celebrates its 25th anniversary.

“The interviews that we’ve already conducted with the cast have been a delight,” said documentary director Meghna Balakumar. “We’ve shot more than 100 hours of footage and have already unearthed stories, commentary, critiques, and more. And we’re continuing to shoot more interviews in the coming months to present the most complete, full and truly new story of the show’s impact and legacy that is only possible at this historical moment.”

While some of the show’s most recognizable stars, like Alexis Bledel, Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy, haven’t been interviewed for the documentary, over a dozen cast and crew members, including Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, Chad Michael Murray, Keiko Agena, Sally Struthers, Liz Torres, Emily Kuroda, Rose Abdoo, director Jamie Babbit and writer and producer Stan Zimmerman, have shared their stories from the show.

“SEARCHING FOR STARS HALLOW is a feature-length documentary that researches, tells, and transforms the story you thought you knew of how GILMORE GIRLS came to life, why it continues to resonate across generations, and how its unique blend of humor, heart and pop culture shaped a devoted worldwide fan community,” a synopsis of the documentary reads. “The documentary goes beyond the show itself, transforming it by featuring all new, never-before-seen interviews with cast members, behind-the-scenes insights from the crew, insightful commentary with new perspective and meaning via stories from writers and directors, and heartfelt testimonials from fans whose lives were changed by the show.”

Though the show ended its seven season run on The CW in 2007, it continues to find new life and new viewers on Netflix, where it regularly finds itself among the top 10 shows on the entire platform. In 2016, Netflix even created a mini-reboot which provided fans with a four-episode supercut showing where all of the show’s favorite characters have ended up.

“It’s wonderful. I swear the show is bigger now than it was at any peak of when it was on the air, and it’s just so strange to me,” the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, told The Hollywood Reporter last November. “When we started this show, kids were not walking around with cell phones. There was no social media…it’s always interesting to me that [kids today] can relate to a show that’s such a foreign time to them, and yet there’s something in it that they can connect to. I think that’s amazing.”

While the documentary does not currently have a planned release date, it gives fans much to look forward to. In the meantime, fans can always revisit Stars Hallow by binging the show on Netflix.
