Fifth GOD’S NOT DEAD Offers This Powerful Lesson About Faith and Politics
By Movieguide® Contributor
GOD’S NOT DEAD: IN GOD WE TRUST reminds Christians that they can make a difference in politics and it is extremely important that they get involved rather than bury their head in the sand.
“What the movie is about is that Christians don’t want to be involved in politics, you know. There’s this crazy stat that says 40 million American Christians don’t vote in presidential election[s],” David A.R. White told TBN. “[They aren’t] involved, which is just voting. Like that’s the first step of getting involved, and so that’s the movie.”
“And then, you know, there are lots of twists and turns, and the arch nemesis in the movie is all about stamping out God in culture,” White continued. “In our country, unfortunately, there’s a lot of truth to that going on right now.”
GOD’S NOT DEAD: IN GOD WE TRUST follows the story of a pastor, played by White, who runs for Congress after the incumbent suddenly suspends his campaign. White’s character’s main opponent plans on removing religion’s influence on public policy, stamping out any Christian impact on our nation.
“The crazy thing about the GOD’S NOT DEAD franchise is that it kind of mirrors what’s going on in culture at the time,” White said. “I would love to say, you know, we come up with these brilliant concepts and it’s all our idea, but really, I feel like it’s a bit of God-breathed, you know — not to say it’s anything close to scripture.”
“I just believe that God brings it for such a time as this. He brings it out, and this one, again, just seems like it’s aligning up perfectly with where culture is and what culture needs to hear,” he continued.
The relation to real life is important because the makers of the movies want their lessons to impact the audience for a long time, rather than entertain them and be forgotten the next day. When their lessons can be applied to real life, they have a much larger impact.
“[The GOD’S NOT DEAD franchise] is about calling people to use their talents and be of service in their communities in a way that is unique to them,” Isaiah Washington said after the release of the fourth movie.
GOD’S NOT DEAD: IN GOD WE TRUST hits theaters on Sept. 12.
