FABULOUS TO FIXER UPPER’s Jenny Marrs reflected on how her book-writing process mirrors life.
“My journal reminded me this morning that it has been one year since I excitedly and nervously sent off the final manuscript for ‘Trust God, Love People,'” Marrs wrote alongside a photo of her kitchen table scattered with notebooks.
As she reflected on all of the changes in her manuscript and the writing process, she reflected on Anne Lamott’s words from Bird by Bird:
E. L. Doctorow once said that “writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way. You don’t have to see where you’re going, you don’t have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way. You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you.”
Marrs says it’s not just great advice for writing a book but for life.

“Just keep looking two or three feet ahead and trust God for the destination. 🤍,” she finished.
Her book, Trust God, Love People, is about Marrs’ real-life experiences with faith.
Part of the description reads, “In Trust God, Love People, Jenny opens wide the doors to her life and her family’s home to share stories of how little steps of faith have added up to an unexpected and abundant life. We ride shotgun next to her as she moves to Bentonville, Arkansas, where she knows almost no one, and watch her slowly put down roots…Jenny shares intimate glimpses into their years-long fight to adopt their daughter Sylvie from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as behind-the-scenes details about how their work to restore old homes became Fixer to Fabulous.”
Earlier this month, Marrs revealed that she has an idea for a new book.
“An idea has been slowly sifting to the surface and I *think* the book will be based upon the first six words of one of the verses I clung to over the last year: ‘Yet I still dare to hope…’ Lamentations 3:21,” she said on Instagram.
She doubted whether she could do it with her busy schedule and lack of “creative juices.” But, then she remembered the very thing she’s writing about and got the courage to start it.
“Maybe I’ll crack open the old laptop and see what He wants me to say,” she said. “I just wanted to share in case someone else is facing down an idea that seems a bit implausible. Let’s dare to hope together and see where He takes us. 🤍”
Like Marrs, let’s trust God with our futures and take the next step He sets before us.
