Whether we realize it or not, the internet is a breeding ground for exploitation.
According to the U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report for 2024, nearly 27 million people are “exploited for labor, services, and commercial sex” every year in the United States.
Stop Child Exploitation estimates that at least 15 million children in the U.S. are “physically exploited” each year.
Because of these devastating statistics, A21, “one of the largest organizations in the world that is solely fighting human trafficking,” exposes how predators take advantage of victims.
“Exploitation can happen to anyone, even in seemingly ordinary moments,” the group wrote in a recent Facebook post. “Charaya was just 13 when she thought she was making a new friend online. What began as innocent conversations quickly turned into manipulation, fear, and threats. But thanks to her bravery in speaking up and seeking help, her story didn’t end there.”

“Through A21, Charaya found counseling, peer support, and a safe space to heal. Today, she’s reclaiming her voice, pursuing justice, and discovering hope again. Her courage inspires us all and reminds us why awareness is so crucial,” A21 continued. “Brave survivors like Charaya share their stories so we can learn to recognize the signs and equip those around us who may be most vulnerable. And supporters like you make that life-changing work possible.”
Evangelist Christine Caine celebrated the organization’s work that freed two women from sexual exploitation in the U.S.
“After years of exploitation through manipulation and control, both women have safely connected with A21’s team and are now receiving vital support, including legal services, counseling, assistance with basic needs, and vital development through A21’s Life Programs,” Caine wrote.
A21’s upcoming Global Freedom Summit will also help “raise awareness” and “spark action” as they highlight “the growing crisis of online child sexual exploitation.”
“Through real survivor stories, expert insights, and practical training, this immersive presentation equips individuals and communities to recognize exploitation and take meaningful steps to stop it,” A21 said of the event.
Realizing the dangers threatening your kids online can be overwhelming, but you have tools available to help you protect them.
The U.S. Department of Justice encourages parents to teach their kids to “understand online risks, only chat with people they know, ensure their online accounts are private, block people they don’t know or trust, and trust their instinct — if something makes them feel uncomfortable, tell a trusted adult about it.”
Parents should also be aware of the apps and platforms their children use, frequently checking in with them and implementing proper parental controls.
Former NFL star Tim Tebow believes a bright future is possible for those who’ve been exploited.
“The biblical form of Hope means to look forward with confidence, expectation, and anticipation,” he said on Instagram last year. “I believe the ‘Renewed Hope Act of 2024’ to combat child sexual exploitation is going to do just that: give hope to kids, to protect them, to love them, and to show them Faith, Hope and Love in their darkest hour of need.”
While the fight against exploitation can be daunting, with the proper tools and resources like A21 or Tebow’s foundation, freedom is possible.
