Is ABC News Biased?
Movieguide® Contributor
Sen. Tom Cotton is calling out ABC for what he believes is media bias.
“ABC allowing Kamala Harris to say ‘no U.S. troops are in combat zones’ without any pushback or fact-checking is outrageous. This goes beyond bias — it’s a media company effectively joining the Harris campaign,” Cotton said.
In last week’s debate, Kamala Harris made this statement: “There is not one member of the United States military who is in active duty in a combat zone in any war zone around the world, the first time this century.”
However, a recent video provided by Rep. Jim Banks shows servicemen being fired at with bullets and explosives in a place that cannot be divulged to the public. He says it’s one of three recent attacks on troops.
It’s not surprising that ABC’s debate moderators didn’t fact-check Harris.
The Media Bias/Fact Check reports that ABC displays bias towards the left. It said, “They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by appeals to emotion or stereotypes) to favor liberal causes.”
Another organization that assesses media bias, AllSides, also reported that ABC leans toward the left.
Fox News said, “ABC News’ David Muir and Linsey Davis, who moderated the debate, fact-checked former President Trump multiple times while failing to fact-check Harris at all.”
It’s imperative to have discernment in all areas of media — political debates, movies, shows, radio, news — everything.
Movieguide®’s founder Dr. Ted Baehr says it’s important to ask “How are government and business portrayed?” and “How is history treated in the media product?”
He notes, “When the media revises the past to suit their worldview, it is a very serious issue for the future of our civilization…Any thinking person understands the threat of revising history to remove the memory of the holocaust, but few object to the wholesale revision of history that supports our republican democracy and Christian heritage.”
And the same goes for the present. When someone paints over current events to suit their narrative, you’ve got to ask, “Why?”

As Christians, we need to exercise discernment to vet through the scads of articles and content we see each day. But, what should we do if we’re unsure about one? The book of James offers great insight.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5 (NIV)
This is where prayer comes into play. If we’re unsure as to what news is trustworthy, we can come to the Lord in prayer just as the book of James states. In light of the tough news these days, it’s encouraging to know that prayer can guide us with discernment but is also plays a role in the fight for justice.
