Author Jackson Terkeurst, son of Christian author Lysa Terkeurst, explains why adoption shows him a picture of God’s love as he celebrates National Adoption Month.

“November is National Adoption Month – a time to honor the stories that changed our lives forever. For me, adoption isn’t just a word – it’s the reason I’m here today. It’s the story of God taking what was broken and rebuilding it with love, grace, and second chances,” Terkeurst wrote on Instagram. “From the streets of Liberia to a family in North Carolina, my journey has taught me this: adoption is a picture of redemption. It’s the living proof that God still writes hope into every story.”

“To every parent who’s said yes, every child waiting for home, and every person walking through the tension of loss and love, your story matters more than you know,” he continued.

Terkeurst was adopted by Lysa over 20 years ago. Her heart was moved to adopt Jackson and his adopted brother Mark after they came to America with a Liberian choir and performed at Lysa’s church.

“These 12 beautiful boys from the other side of the world got up and started to sing from the depth of their soul, just the most beautiful music,” Lysa told Today in 2013. “I was very challenged by the reality that these boys who had been singing and smiling and just had such joy in their life, that they had nothing.”

Having followed in his mother’s footsteps and become an author and public speaker himself, Terkeurst often shares his adoption story and praises those who chose to go down that often trying road.

“Adoption doesn’t erase the hard places – it meets them with love. It doesn’t replace the past – it gives it a new direction. I’ll never forget what it felt like to walk into a home where I was wanted…chosen…and loved with a kind of love that heals slowly and deeply,” he said.

“This National Adoption Month, I’m celebrating the families who open their doors, the kids who carry more courage than we’ll ever know, and the God who writes redemption into every chapter,” Terkeurst continued. “My story is proof: Love really can build what brokenness tried to steal.”

It is amazing to see the kingdom of heaven come to earth through those who chose to adopt. Every Christian is an adopted child of God, chosen to be a part of His family, and it is encouraging to see that love and grace poured out on children who have no one to look after them.
