DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has some ambitious expectations for the upcoming “LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight” video game.
While the LEGO franchise is often associated with lighthearted fun, Gunn promises that this game will feature “real emotion and stakes,” a different feel from previous LEGO games.
Per ScreenRant, the new game aims to “combine elements from the many Batman comics, films and cartoons into one celebration of the Dark Knight.”
“Is there something innate about Batman that makes him so beloved across the entire world? A tragic story that is being transformed into something good,” Gunn pondered in a video announcing the game. “Or is it that Batman has attracted some of the greatest artists in all mediums (comic books, gaming, film, television) that have told the story about this character, and because of that his legend has grown and grown? I think the answer is both.”
He later added, “There’s something about LEGO that just opens our mind to play and creativity. And kind of our own personal artistic expression. It has that spirit of the LEGO physical toys.”

Malin Wagner of TT Games said, “When we’re doing the testing now, it’s fantastic to hear the feedback where they’re saying, ‘You feel like you’re Batman.’ You are coming out of the darkness and taking the baddies down.”
During an interview with GamesRadar+, Johnathan Smith, strategic director of TT Games, said developers relied on source materials that Batman fans know and love.
“So it’s a fusion of all those iconic moments that you remember, laced and woven with deep cut references and our own humorous jokes, to bring the experience of becoming the Dark Knight to life for players. We draw upon them all, and we bring them together, and then we create one story that unifies and is essential.”
Smith also emphasized the honor it is to work on such an iconic character.
“We feel it’s a huge privilege. We feel we’ve got the richest amount of material to draw from, and we are so excited that no one’s ever put all those pieces together in one experience with a video game,” he said, adding, “We can do that in a way that no one’s ever seen or experienced before, with new technology and a really immersive Gotham city, with mechanics that progress the player experience to match the emotional journey of the character.”
In the comment section a clip of the game posted to the TT Games Instagram account, fans shared their excitement.
“I have genuinely spent YEARS waiting for a game like this, thank you,” one person said. Another person added, “All I have to say is YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
The game, which is set to release in 2026, is created in collaboration between DC, LEGO, Warner Bros Games and TT Games.
“We are thrilled to announce LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, a fantastic new game designed to entertain and provide enjoyment for every type of player,” JB Perrette, president and CEO, Streaming & Games, Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement. “Our remarkable team at TT Games is working hard to deliver a fresh take on the beloved Batman universe, offering new and improved features beyond previous LEGO games that will excite both longtime fans and gamers of all levels.”
