How Jonathan Roumie Navigates Jesus’ Humanity and Divinity in THE CHOSEN

Jonathan Roumie recently spoke about he navigates portraying Jesus’ humanity and His divinity in THE CHOSEN.

In a special behind-the-scenes video posted to YouTube, Roumie shared a moment where Jesus knew of a character’s future death and how a slight gesture communicated his knowledge as Jesus but also his trust in God as a human.

“If you go back, I think it’s Season 2 where Ramah’s father visits, and then…he’s waiting to talk to Jesus. Jesus finally arrives, so they have a conversation, and then just before he leaves, he has a moment with Ramah, and then you see Jesus standing there, and obviously Rama’s father is not happy, and he’s worried for her,” the actor explained.

“Then there’s a moment where you see Jesus standing there, and at one point because I know what’s going to happen — I didn’t know when, but I know it’s going to happen in the future as Jesus — I kind of look up, and then it sort of changes my countenance slightly for the rest of that scene, but it’s almost imperceptible,” he said. “You know something’s going on, but now when you see this you can go back and be like ‘oh that’s when he knew.’”

Yasmine Al-Bustami also shared her perspective in the video, expressing how it was difficult to watch her character who she played for years die in Season 4.

“As I’m dying, you know, me and him are still connecting and we’re right there, and I’m still seeing some of his grief,” she explained.

Through tears, she continued, “That lives on, even though we’re characters it’s weird…the fact that we’ve been at this for years and live living with these characters for years, it’s a lot to process.”

THE CHOSEN Season 5 will begin releasing next month, starting on March 27. Three parts — Part 1 (episodes 1-2), Part 2 (episodes 3, 4, 5) and Part 3 (episodes 6, 7, 8) — will drop over the next four weeks.

“The table is set. The people of Israel welcome Jesus as king while his disciples anticipate his crowning. But — instead of confronting Rome — he turns the tables on the Jewish religious festival. Their power threatened, the country’s religious and political leaders will go to any length to ensure this Passover meal is Jesus’ last,” the synopsis reads.
